It’s been a dominant season for Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith so far. He’s playing the best football of his career, and was a key part of keeping Tom Brady clean on Sunday. In a 38-3 victory over the Bears, Smith and the offensive line allowed zero sacks. With Bears defensive end Robert Quinn on the COVID list, Smith’s matchup got a little easier. And he was dominant as a result.

Facing off against Bears edge rusher Trevis Gipson, Smith devoured the second year player. Gipson finished the game with just one tackle and zero sacks. After the game, Smith made it clear who won the matchup.

“Make sure you put No. 99 (Gipson) as my son!” Smith said to the media. “I made him my son today.”

Gipson was enjoying a strong 2021 campaign before running into Smith. The pass rusher entered his first career start with two sacks in limited action. But Smith is currently Pro Football Focus’ 7th-highest graded tackle. He’s given up just 12 pressures all season, and only one sack. And on Sunday, Smith put his name in the conversation for the 2021 Pro Bowl. The 7th-year lineman has improved every game this season, and every year of his career.

The Bucs travel to New Orleans to take on the division rival Saints next Sunday.
