It’s been a dominant season for Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith so far. He’s playing the best football of his career, and was a key part of keeping Tom Brady clean on Sunday. In a 38-3 victory over the Bears, Smith and the offensive line allowed zero sacks. With Bears defensive end Robert Quinn on the COVID list, Smith’s matchup got a little easier. And he was dominant as a result.

Facing off against Bears edge rusher Trevis Gipson, Smith devoured the second year player. Gipson finished the game with just one tackle and zero sacks. After the game, Smith made it clear who won the matchup.

“Make sure you put No. 99 (Gipson) as my son!” Smith said to the media. “I made him my son today.”

Gipson was enjoying a strong 2021 campaign before running into Smith. The pass rusher entered his first career start with two sacks in limited action. But Smith is currently Pro Football Focus’ 7th-highest graded tackle. He’s given up just 12 pressures all season, and only one sack. And on Sunday, Smith put his name in the conversation for the 2021 Pro Bowl. The 7th-year lineman has improved every game this season, and every year of his career.

The Bucs travel to New Orleans to take on the division rival Saints next Sunday.

Not sure if Smith should be bragging about dominating a backup. Now if he did that to Khalil Mack or Quinn I could understand the chest thumping.

Doesn’t matter who he did it to. Some people just never give up their player hate, ever. SMH!

How true. Although I have never been a big fan of Smith’s I have always supported him and knew he was giving his best effort.

“The 7th-year lineman has improved every game this season, and every year of his career.” All you can ask and he always seems available to play. What more can you ask for?

Nothing. He’s playing his best now and has changed how he is viewed in the NFL. He has the most important job in Tampa even more than Tom Brady because without Smith playing this well Tom would not be playing as well as he has been.

I know Quinn didn’t play, but I didn’t see Mack either.

About 1/3 of the regulars here at PR comment pages are confirmed life members of the Donovan Smith Haters’ Club. They’re not having a good season this year, after a terrible season last year. By the way, haters, did you happen to notice who Smith was protecting the first five years of his career at Tampa? Yeah, THAT GUY, the guy with the slowest windup of any quarterback in the league, making himself constant sack bait for opposing defenses. Then starting last season, Smith is protecting the GOAT, with his famously quick read on defenses and fast release, and now… Read more »

Donovan Smith looks like a beast. He’s always had plays where he would just manhandle a defender but now he is consistent in his play to play which is why he’s only given up one sack so far. You add Wirfs and you have the best OT combo in the NFL.

Man this is the NFL every single player is talented and on any given Sunday it could be their day. I have no issue with Smith saying this because it’s true. He son’d this man all game long and deserves to brag about it. Smith is playing like a man on fire and I am loving it. I have been a supporter of Donovan Smith his whole career and Las year showed me I was right and he is just hammering home how good he can be this season. Him and Wirfs are the best tackle combo to me.
