It was a dismal trip to London for the Bucs as they fell hard to a division rival in the Carolina Panthers on the heels of a six-turnover, career-high five interception performance from quarterback Jameis Winston.

The focus was largely on Winston as head coach Bruce Arians stepped up to the podium at One Buc Place on Monday, as well as the state of the team as it heads into their bye week before heading to Tennessee in Week 8.

(Opening statement)
“After watching the tape, the story’s the same. Seven turnovers you’re not beating anyone, even a high school team. Why the turnovers? I think it’s a collection of receivers, offensive line, tight ends, running backs and quarterbacks all had a hand in every one. Running backs, protection-wise, might have been the worst it’s been and we’ll do a better job of finding our guys and blocking them next time. It’s not all on the quarterback. A lot of it is, I’m not going to shy away from that either. Defensively I thought our front seven played outstanding. Again we took one of the best backs, other than one play when we busted assignment and didn’t cover him and failed to tackle him, kind of took him out of the game. We put our defense in a situation of sudden-change defense, ball on the 25 I think five times. Other than the speed sweep where we busted an assignment they only get, that one play, 20 points which should have given us a chance to stay in the game and it didn’t. I thought defensively, other than third down, the speed sweep and the screen pass or the check down to [Christian] McCaffrey we played extremely well. Good enough to win.

(On what Mike Evans didn’t do on Winston’s first interception)
“He should have been two yards wider and coming back to the ball.”

(On if that play from Evans came as a surprise)
“I’ve had a lot of receivers who only see the corner, stop and think the balls coming. This one was a little late and outside of where he was going to be, so they’re both at fault there, the quarterback and the receiver.”

(On Winston holding onto the ball too long)
“There were three or four sacks where he sacked himself. Incompletions don’t get you beat. Sacks and sack fumbles get you beat. We’ve been working and working and working and this is one of those games where he tried to make a play out of nothing and that comes back to bite you.”

(On if Arians’ thoughts have changed about whether Winston can be a long-term successful quarterback after Sunday)
“No. I look at the reasons why, what happened, and if it happens again, yeah, it’ll concern the hell out of me.”

(On if the bye week after a game like Sunday helps or hurts the team)
“I think the bye week helps a bunch of us. This travel’s been tough. We need the rest because we’ve got two more and one long trip again against really good football teams so we needed this right now.”

(On if Winston should be this jittery five seasons into his career)
“I think that when you get hit, I don’t care if you’re Tom Brady, when you get hit early in games it’s different and we got him hit early, excluding the first play, we got him hit too much early in the game.”

(On if he can relate Winston’s “Superman” mentality to anyone in his experience)
“Oh yeah, that one in Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger. He would never throw the ball away. Peyton Manning would throw the ball away in a heartbeat. Ben thought he could make a play out of anything, like Jameis does, and he’s made a bunch of them but he also got hurt a couple times holding on to it like that.”

(On what he needs to see from the leaders on this team after two straight losses)
“That’s one of the messages we just talked about. It happened my first year in Arizona, then we never did lose two in a row. I’ll see Monday how we show up and I’ll know from there.”

(On if he’s contemplated making a change at quarterback)
“Not at all.”

(On what makes Arians believe that Winston’s roller coaster performances will eventually end)
“I think just him playing better, the guys around him playing better, coaching better, the whole thing. I think that as we continue to grow together, I think it will get better and these games will be one in a million, not one in five.”

(On getting both Cam Brate and O.J. Howard involved on Sunday)
“They’re out there together a bunch and this was one of those situations where they were double-teaming outside a bunch so the middle of the field was open. Cam made a nice play on the touchdown and the other over route, O.J. had more opportunities but he dropped a couple. I think they were targeted eight times and they were a big part of the game plan.”

(On if it’s easy to identify the mistakes Winston is making and what those mistakes are)
“The biggest thing is holding onto the ball and getting sacked. First of all, you don’t want him to get hurt. When you make one guy miss or you scramble to the side of the field where there are no receivers, throw the ball away. It’s that simple.”

(On two backup quarterbacks getting the ball out quickly against the Bucs the past two weeks)
“They did a really good job of max protecting. They were three-of-15 or whatever on third down so most of their damage was done on second down. They had a nice game plan of chipping and protecting and for the most part, other than about three plays, we were really good.”

(On getting the young secondary back on track)
“I don’t think they’re off track. We had about three plays on over routes. Carlton [Davis] undercut it, goes for an interception and the guy makes a nice throw over his head. Vernon [Hargreaves] can be a little more physical covering guys. He got bumped off pretty good on that one comeback, I thought about challenging it but we aren’t winning those challenges so it’s a waste of time. He got shoved pretty good on that one. It’s just a matter of playing a little bit better.”

(On if their game against Tennessee is a must-win game)
“I don’t think so, it’s still too early for must-wins. We need to win, but I don’t use that term must-win very often. Just like everyone else, we’ll have our game plan set and ready to go, take a little time off and come back ready to go.”

(On if plans on making any personnel changes)
“The biggest thing right now would just be punt returner. It’s not as much the [muffed punts] as it is the lack of production.”

(On how much the Bucs need a third receiver to step up)
“I don’t think we really do. I think both tight ends stepped in there pretty good. Scotty [Miller] is getting baptized. We could use Breshad [Perriman] back, hopefully soon. He’s a bigger, stronger guy, a faster guy.”

“He’ll have pads on, going one-on-one with a couple offensive linemen who will stay as practice squad guys, and he’ll practice tomorrow and Wednesday.”

(On who could fill the punt return roll)
“I’ve got a couple of candidates. T.J. Logan, Vernon, Scotty maybe. Bobo [Wilson] is fearless but he hasn’t dropped them. He also hasn’t been productive with his fearlessness, he’s only averaging about three yards so that’s something we’ll have to look at.”

(On who will overlook Pierre-Paul’s practices)
“Our training staff, Larry Foote, our outside linebacker’s coach and our offensive line coach.”

(On the performance of the new starters on the offensive line)
“Earl [Watford] played really well, he didn’t have a problem. He could have played better in the run game. Josh [Wells] got a holding penalty when Jameis came out of the pocket and got him a holding penalty. His only bad play was the sack-fumble but he played as expected. I didn’t think they were going to go out there and just set the world on fire but they didn’t play bad.”

(On if Demar Dotson will return for Tennessee)
“We hope so.”

(On what Arians wants the players to take away from the bye week)
“Learn how to prepare better. We’re still making way too many mental errors in critical situations.”
