Everyone wants to have their dream team on paper, but it’s never feasible due to the salary cap. That changed this week when Anthony Holzman-Escareno of NFL.com constructed a 53-man roster that would fit under budget. Three Bucs made the final cut with a couple others in consideration.

There were a few different ground rules regarding the selection process. It included the amount of rookies you could take, along with how many franchise tagged players you can pick. When it was all said and done, Rob Gronkowski, Shaq Barrett and Lavonte David represented the Bucs on the team.

However, neither of the three players were named as starters.

Gronkowski was slated behind Travis Kelce and George Kittle. Barrett found himself backing up edge rushers Myles Garrett and Chase Young, and David was third on the depth chart in back of Darius Leonard and Fred Warner.

Though Gronkowski is past his prime, he still comes up in the big moments. Every Bucs fan will forever recall his two-touchdown performance in Super Bowl LV. Barrett jumped onto the list after leading the league over the last two years with 31.5 sacks. He also had a memorable Super Bowl with eight pressures and a sack.

David is still regarded as a player that’s been consistently great since he joined the league and is an elite leader for the Bucs. He would provide an important veteran presence to any young linebacker group.

You may be asking about some other talented players on the Bucs’ roster. They were close in consideration as five other Bucs were just a few choices away from making this fictional squad. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, nose tackle Vita Vea, linebacker Devin White, cornerback Carlton Davis III and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. were the players held in high regard.

If you see a common there, all five players are still on their rookie contracts. That speaks to the success that Jason Licht has had drafting and developing talent.
