The Bucs have announced they have placed outside linebacker Cam Gill on the short term injured reserve list.
His placement on the Bucs’ short-term IR list instead of the season-long list, means he’ll be able to return to the team in as little as three weeks. Gill has missed nearly all of training camp with a lower leg injury. He did return for two practices, but was back on the sideline for the remainder of camp thereafter. At one point he was seen wearing a boot on his left foot and he missed the entire 2021 preseason.
Gill, undrafted out of Wagner College, was initially on the team’s practice squad in 2020 before being called up to the 53-man roster in October. He finished the regular season with six tackles while playing 49 percent of the snaps on special teams. In the playoffs, Gill saw some snaps on defense and finished with two tackles a forced fumble. He notched his first career half sack in Super Bowl LV against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gill was just starting to carve out a role on defense late last season and this injury was an unfortunate setback in his development. A key special teams contributor though, Gill will be a welcome addition back on a unit that struggled throughout the preseason.
