Latest Bucs Headlines

Over the past few weeks, abundant rumors have swirled that Odell Beckham Jr. could end up on the Bucs. But Bruce Arians shot down the idea a couple days ago, telling the media the Bucs were not pursuing the free agent wide receiver.

“No, no,” Arians said, chuckling. “Too many letters. I’ve already got AB [Antonio Brown]. I don’t need OBJ [Odell Beckham Jr.].”

Fast-forward a few days, and Beckham Jr. is now an L.A. Ram. The star receiver signed a one-year contract for up to $4.5 million on Thursday. The Rams continue to go all in on building a roster that can contend with the Bucs in the NFC. This offseason, the Rams aggressively traded for quarterback Matt Stafford to bolster their offense. Since then, they’ve pulled off a number of additional moves, including trading second and third round picks for Von Miller last week.

Los Angeles now boasts three legitimate stars on defense in Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and Miller. On offense, Stafford, Beckham Jr, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp for a formidable battery in the passing game. But when Arians was about the Rams approach on 95.3 WDAE on Friday morning, the head coach offered a word of caution.

“Sometimes you can have too many [stars],” Arians said. “So we’ll see how that works out for them.”

Some may scoff at Arians’ remarks, considering the Bucs have gone all in on a star-studded lineup. But Tampa Bay has been extremely careful at the personalities they’ve built their roster around, adding a lot of big-name talent in supplementary roles. Many of the teams stars are homegrown, such as Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Lavonte David, Devin White and Vita Vea. But when the Bucs brought in big-name free agents, they prioritized character and leadership. Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul, Ryan Jensen and others have been cultural transformers in Tampa Bay. And when question marks like Antonio Brown and Leonard Fournette were signed, the standard was clear. Buy into a team-first mentality, or get released.

We know Arians isn’t against loading up on talent, so this remark seems more pointed. His skepticism may revolve around the Rams addition of Beckham in particular. The talented, but enigmatic, receiver has worn out his welcome on two other franchises already. It’ll be interesting to see how he fits into a Rams locker room where he is clearly the third offensive option.
