With the recent retirements of Tom Brady and Ali Marpet, Bucs nation has been waiting on Rob Gronkowski’s decision to see if he will join them or return for another year. While he may still retire, Bruce Arians offered some optimism he may stick around for a 12th season Monday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“He’s been working out at the facility twice a week, so we’ll see,” Arians said about Gronkowski.
It’s promising news about the future Hall of Famer. Gronkowski said he would take about three to four weeks to make his decision regarding retirement. While most thought Gronk would follow suit with Brady’s retirement, it seems at the very least he is keeping his body in shape if he chooses to continue his playing career.
Over his two seasons with the Bucs, Gronkowski played in 28 games. He compiled 100 receptions for 1,425 yards and 13 touchdowns. Gronkowski only played in 12 games in 2021 but finished with more receptions, yards and one fewer score than his first season with the team.
In six playoff contests Gronkowski recorded 17 catches for 226 yards and three scores. Two of which came in the Bucs’ 31-9 Super Bowl win over the Chiefs. Gronkowski, who turns 33 in May, signed a pair of one-year deals with the Bucs. His first contract was a one-year, $10 million deal in 2020. Last year he signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract.
With the Bucs staff descending on Indianapolis for the NFL combine, tight end will be a position they will be looking at heavily. Cam Brate and Codey McElroy are the only tight ends roster right now. Brate the only one with extensive game experience.
