Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield said he’s going to be all about ball this season now that his contract negotiations have stopped with Tampa Bay. But he took time on Thursday to voice his severe displeasure over failed discussions with the Buccaneers in a very salty way.

Mayfield is quite frustrated that the Buccaneers have not valued him properly the way he should be valued, and made that public sentiment after the second day of training camp.

“I wanted a deal done and set the deadline and told them it was going to be all ball after that, and I did mean that,” Mayfield began. “I don’t know if they thought I was just going to take some of the offers that they gave, but I’m at the point of my career and understanding what I’ve brought to this franchise – one, I’m very, very thankful for the chance they gave me. Do not get me wrong on that.

“But, I really know what I brought to this franchise leadership-wise and even play-wise. It’s been some of the best years of my career and I think it’s only a going to trend upwards. Just being comfortable in feeling that.”

After addressing the local media, Mayfield was interviewed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who reports that the Bucs only offered him a two-year contract when he was looking for a longer deal.

Baker Mayfield Disappointed He Hasn’t Gotten A Franchise QB Contract

At the center of Baker Mayfield’s anger comes from him not being viewed as a franchise quarterback in the Bucs’ eyes. Mayfield, of course, has been spurned before by the Cleveland Browns when they traded him off to the Panthers in pursuit of Deshaun Watson, so that certainly had to be on his mind when it came to another contract negotiation with the Buccaneers.

Mayfield said everyone has told him that he’s a franchise quarterback, so why isn’t he getting that type of deal? Mayfield mentioned that he felt disrespected over that notion.

“Disappointing in that regard to feel disrespected a little bit,” Mayfield said. “That’s really the disappointing part of it is feeling undervalued after thinking you’ve earned it. This is not a “poor me” thing. There’s a lot other people that have it way worse off, but I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories that I deserve to be compensated for that.

“I think I’m a franchise quarterback, I’ve been told I’m a franchise quarterback. It’s been said publicly from ownership down here, and so to not have a deal done is very disappointing.”

Baker Mayfield Reiterates That It’s All Ball Moving Forward

One thing Baker Mayfield doesn’t want to be – despite his anger towards the franchise – is a distraction to the team. That’s why he made sure to address everyone in the locker room that it will not impact his play negatively when the season arrives and while they’re working right now in training camp.

In fact, it will likely fuel him.

“I said the deadline was the deadline,” Mayfield said.  “I addressed the team to let them know I meant that. It’s all ball. I’m with these guys. I think all the guys that have been here know exactly who I am, the guys that are new here I wanted to address that because they might of had a notion prior to coming here about who I am as a person, but it’s all team. It’s all about winning here now and what we’re going to do.”

He then took a moment to address another contract situation that the Bucs are also dealing with in the form of free-agent-to-be Vita Vea and his trade request.

“Hopefully Vita gets his back fixed and gets his deal done,” Mayfield said. “He’s the second-longest tenured Buc behind CG (Chris Godwin) and Vita deserves that. He’s the anchor of our defense and I hope they take care of him.”

Many of us have learned that Mayfield has been at his best when there’s more pressure on him. The bigger the chip the better. With the disrespect from the Buccaneers, Mayfield now has quite the chip on his shoulder entering the 2026 season. When he says he’s going to have a good year, he means it.

“I know I’m going to have a good year,” he said. “I know this team, the things that we went through last year put us in a good spot for this year depth-wise. A lot of guys have been thrown into the fire to be able to grow and learn fast. It didn’t go the way we wanted but it’s a new season and it’s going to help us in the long run this year. (We) added some new pieces and so I’m excited about it. It’s all ball from here.”

And if the Bucs believe they can renegotiate with him during the upcoming season, they can think again.

“After today I’m not answering anymore because I’m not negotiating anymore,” Mayfield said.
