With the 2019 season quickly approaching, it’s arguably the best time of the year to be a football fan.

Rosters are beginning to take shape, training camp is getting ready to start and every fan base is free to believe with impunity that their favorite team is the one to beat — or the one that’s going to shock the world — this upcoming season.

Hope is the common denominator for fans around the league and much of that comes on the back of emerging young stars primed to be the next wave of superstars. Bleacher Report released their list of breakout candidates for all 32 teams in 2019, with O.J. Howard being their best bet for Tampa Bay.

“The arrival of Bruce Arians almost guarantees the breakout will come on the offensive side of the ball for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But the “who” is harder to discern thanks to the verifiable talents of both tight end O.J. Howard and wideout Chris Godwin.

Really, though, we could argue Godwin broke out last year with 842 yards and seven scores. And leaning into a 6’6″, 251-pound target like Howard has a feeling of comfort to it when predicting a breakout.

Howard only got 48 targets last year, catching 34 of them for 565 yards and five scores over 10 games. He hit the 50-yard mark in eight of those games. In theory, better quarterback play and scheme should free him up for big total numbers.

Keep in mind opportunity, too. Adam Humphries and his 76 catches with five scores is gone, as is DeSean Jackson and his 41 and four. An offensive mind like Arians is bound to tap a mismatch creator like Howard as the fix.”

  1. Taylor most of the people I Know pick the Fall as the best time to be a football fan when the games are actually played, But who’s arguing… My “break out” player this year is Chris Godwin aka Rod God. He’s finally going to get his chance to show the NFL world his skills after sitting behind Djax & Hump for two years. I think with all the attention that Mike Evans will receive from defenses I think it will create favorable matchups for Godwin to exploit their weaknesses and turn it into a huge year. Go Bucs!!!

  2. Adam Rank of NFL.com thinks OJ Howard will be the Bucs 2019 breakout player too. But surprise! surprise! Rank thinks at slot receiver, not TE. Rank believes WR Larry Fitzgerald had his best performance when BA moved him to the slot in Arizona.

That may be true, but I think WR Chris Godwin will have something to say about being the breakout player in the slot. This I am sure of. Wherever OJ lines up he will be a weapon! Go Bucs!

  3. I think the Bucs are going to give defenses fits this year and it’s going to be hard to double team anyone of these guys if they get hot. I imagine someone is always going to be open. Howard will be a force to be reckon with. It appears the Duncaneers are back, better than they were before. Lets hope one of the speedy receivers will pan out well to stretch the field making it that much more difficult to cover any of them. Go Bucs!

  4. No o line, no break out. Going to have keep 6 or 7 in to pass block.

  5. Howard is safe pick if he can stay healthy.

I lean towards Godwin as far as biggest breakout. Him in slot is going to be tough for teams especially if they double Evans and have to worry about Howard and potentially Perrimans speed.

  6. I’m hoping they do some creative things with Howard. I was thinking he should be moved around from TE to Widout to FB and possibly even QB in a trick play. I don’t know if he has an arm on him, but he is so athletic, it might be an option.
I would make him the focus of the offense. Attempt to get the ball in his hands as many times as you can.
