The Bucs have selected BYU cornerback Chris Wilcox with the 251st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Despite being a fifth-year player out of BYU at 23-years-old, Wilcox has limited experience as he played in more than eight games just once in college, including just one in 2019. Despite being projected as a developmental corner or potentially a safety, he’s a sure tackler and great speed with a 4.31 40-yard dash at his pro day. Wilcox will likely have to battle for a spot on the Bucs’ roster and would probably find his niche on special teams if he sticks.
“Wilcox is on the older side at the position, but not because he took the customary mission trip prior to enrolling at BYU. He’s dealt with injuries throughout his career and redshirted in 2019 instead of trying to play through a bum ankle. He came back in 2020 and had a career year. BYU knew and utilized his skill set well, as he was oftentimes the flat defender in a two-high concept to his side. That’s where he thrives, as he’s more than willing to come up and be physical as a tackler. Wilcox isn’t going to be everybody’s cup of tea and may be seen as a safety by some teams.”
