The Bucs went into the draft looking to upgrade at right tackle and they’ve addressed the team’s most pressing need, selecting offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs out of Iowa in the first round. Tampa Bay moved up one spot from 14 to the 13 pick in a trade with the 49ers, giving away their 14th pick and the 117th to get him.

PewterReport’s Jon Ledyard wrote about Wirfs in his 2020 NFL Draft Top 15 Offensive Tackle Rankings.

Wirfs is one of the best pure athletes to ever play the position, but I wouldn’t say that his athleticism is quite as functional as Wills’. He’s obviously no slouch, but I didn’t consistently see the elite explosiveness or fleet-footed re-directs on Wirfs tape that I saw in Wills. The Iowa right tackle is still a strong mover who should excel against speed rushers as he refines his set point range, while also having the power to bring defenders to a standstill with a single punch.

The best way to describe Wirfs’ game is smooth or finesse, which is ironic considering he’s more powerful than almost everyone who lines up across from him. When he lands his hands in pass protection, it’s deadly, but when he doesn’t and opponents get into his chest, he gives more ground against bull rushes than you’d like. Oversets can plague him as they do with many young tackles, but his inside hand stays pretty strong against counters.

In the run game, Wirfs has flashes of annihilating opponents, but his fire doesn’t burn constantly like Wills’ or Becton’s, and his finishing can be up-and-down as a result. That isn’t a big deal to me, as Wirfs still generally gets the job done when his technique is on point. His ability to play in a zone or gap scheme at the next level is a big boost to his stock, but I think he’ll be an ideal target for zone-heavy attacks over the other top tackles in the class.

Agreed.

Wirfs actually gives the Bucs a potential nasty right side. Wirfs can push for playing time against Haeg or even Cappa.

What a joke. The worst of the tackles. The one I wanted nothing to do with. With Ceedee Lamb and Jeudy on the board, they take this combine all star. And if that’s not bad enough, they seriously traded up 1 pick. The Niners were never gonna take him. So now they lose a pick for it. Massive fail

Miami reaching for Austin Jackson is a clear indication Wirfs would not have been there because Miami would have moved up if we didn’t.

Listen up, moron. Wirfs virtually certainly would NOT have been there after 13. There are plenty of teams who need quality OTs with LOTS of draft picks available. That a consensus top ten pick was there at 13 was a steal for the Bucs. The net cost to the Bucs was very nearly zero.

How do u know he would’ve been there at 14? What if San Fran wanted him? Cool ur jets! It was EXACTLY what the Bucs needed! And the kid can play either side. Kid is a wrestling/track champ too. All teams have multiple needs my man. In San Fran ur dealing with Buc great John Lynch. Maybe he did the Bucs a solid because they also liked the DT and got another pick. I say win-win for both teams. Besides, u have absolutely no proof that San Fran was not going to draft him at #13! It’s a solid pick my man… u know it, I know it, every Buc fan on this site is well aware that OLine was our most important need. Why u mad dog? Go Bucs! Doesn’t matter what the 49ers needed – all it takes is for someone later than 13 to need an OT. The 49ers were obviously trading. Miami has LOTS of picks this draft (14 total), and they’ve got Tua Tagavailoa to protect, and Wirfs – clearly the best OT left in this draft, can play either right or left or even both sides in the same game – he’s already done that at Iowa.

The 49ers were dealing .. and someone other than the Bucs in need of a quality OT could have easily moved up and left the Bucs with none of the top four OTs – and there is a huge drop after the top 4, with most analysts having Wirfs in the top 2 or 3 OTs in this draft, and a clear top 10 pick. To trade up is only worth 50 points – 1,100 to 1,150 points – equal to a late fourth round pick, in order to protect the best quarterback who ever played the game of football.… Read more »

Naples we’ve had plenty of disagreements over Jameis, but I don’t understand how people don’t see the point of what you’re saying. It was the right move to go up one space to get our guy and it was a great move by Licth. This kid is going to be special. Totally in line with the profootballreference draft value table. Moving up 1 spot to 13 costs just 50 points. Our late fourth round pick was worth 60 points, and the SF 7th rounder is worth but 7 points. We “overpaid” by a mere 3 points.

The profootballreference.com draft value table shows a differential between picks 13 and 14 of just 50 points … that is equal to a late fourth round pick this draft, maybe an early fourth round pick next year. That is not mortgaging the future – particularly when protecting the best quarterback who ever played for the Bucs or any other team on the planet in all world history – the GOAT.

Anyone recall that in Lynch’s first draft for the 49ers he talked Ryan Pace and the Bears into trading up one pick so they could draft Mitch Trubisky. Three years later Lunch convinces Jason Licht to trade up one spot for Tristan Wirfs. If Lynch really liked a trade down in either scenario he would’ve taken it. Instead he talks some of the NFL’s worst GM’s to move up one spoty for a player the 9ers weren’t going to take to begin with. Amazing.

That may be, but it’s more about securing the rights to the pick in front of any of the other 30 teams in the draft as well. If Licht has a high enough value on this pick, then the benefit outweighs the cost of trading. Time will tell.

Another way to look at this is that Tampa gets their pick and 1 year of Shaq Barrett at 4 mil in exchange for Kwon Alexander and his second-deal contract expense.

I don’t like throwing away valuable selections for misguided reasons. Licht threw away a 4th to move up for Aguayo in 2016. Licht traded the 4th round pick that would become Trey Flowers to the Patriots for 2 years of Logan Mankins in 2014. Kwon, as you brought up, was a 4th round selection in 2015. The fact is John Lynch has now made a move down with the team directly behind him in the first round twice in 3 years and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. I’m sure Lynch had multiple offers for the 13th pick and I’m… Read more »
