Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin will become a free agent this season after playing on the franchise tag in 2021. The Pro Bowler addressed his upcoming free agency, current rehab and Tom Brady’s retirement in a recent interview.
On NFL Total Access Friday night, Godwin explained how his rehab was going from the torn ACL he suffered in Week 15.
“I’m doing really good,” Godwin said. “I’m moving around pretty good and making strides every day.”
It’s a positive sign for the Bucs impending free agent. Multiple teams will inquire about the fifth-year pro’s services if Godwin hits the market. But the Bucs don’t want him to leave Tampa Bay either. They’ll make a strong offer to retain Godwin, knowing how important he is to their offense. Godwin could consider his options before making a decision.
“There’s a lot of bread out there man,” Godwin said when reminded there’s a lot of money to be made. “Honestly, I’m just trying to take it day by day. I’m fortunate to be in this position. I’ve worked my tail off and even with the injury I’m recovering very well. So, I’m excited for what the future holds.”
Godwin added, “We’ll see where the cards fall come March.”

Speaking on Godwin’s possible return on NFL Network earlier Friday, Bucs teammate Mike Evans stressed how they needed to have Godwin back in the fold.
“We need him bad, man,” Evans said. “Because he’s one of the best to do it in the game. Very versatile, tough, blue collar guy. The ultimate teammate, one of my favorites that I’ve ever played with. So, I hope and I’m praying that we get him back. But he definitely deserves to be paid his worth. And that’s a lot.”
Godwin returned those sentiments when discussing his upcoming free agency.
“Obviously, I love playing with my guy Mike,” Godwin said. “We’re a one-two punch and we have been that way for a couple of years now. I would love to continue to do that.”
As for his thoughts on Brady’s retirement, Godwin expressed gratitude for being able to play with a great football player, but a greater man.
“I’m very grateful to have gotten to play two seasons with him,” Godwin said. “If this is really it, I’m grateful for him and I’m very happy for my guy.”
For his Super Bowl pick, Godwin is going with the team that knocked the Bucs out of the playoffs.
“Rams in a tight one.”
