It was announced on Monday that the Bucs’ newly-acquired defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh would be fined for a hit on the Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield during their preseason game in late August, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Suh was flagged for roughing the passer on the play and fined $21,056 for shoving Mayfield.

The fine is likely correlated to Suh’s past, as he’s been racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines throughout his career and been punished financially numerous times in the past for violating league rules.

Here is the hit in question.

  2. Blast from the past – this play was deemed legal at the time although 99 caught all kinds of negative feedback from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBpEIRaGq2U Of course with the new rule on blindside block and overall rules on player safety – no way would fly today.

  7. IDC that it was a fine, I love that Suh doesn’t care and just pushes him down. McCoy would never do that, so it’s easy for quarterbacks to forget that he is there…while qb’s against Suh will always remember his hits.

  9. Officials ruining the game. Every time there’s a good play, a flag usually wipes it out, no matter if it was near the play, or how insignificant it might be. I knew Suh would draw a flag on that shove, but a fine? Might as well get your moneys worth next time. Best thing about that play? Suh didn’t help him up, and say my bad Baker, please forgive me! NFL stands for national fairy League.

  12. Bogus, but with his reputation they’ll be looking hard at him all season so we may as well get used to it smh.
I like how they didn’t fine anyone for all the hits Jameis took…but again, his mainstream reputation makes him an easy target.

  15. I thought the call was questionable but a fine? Doesn’t surprise me how lame the nfl has become compared to 15 or so years ago.

  17. People on this board don’t want to hear it, but the NFL is all about high scoring games. Any unwarranted shove on the key NFL moneymaker (the QB) is going to be punished. Suh is going to get caught continuously as he has never shown any sign of stopping this behavior. Like it or not, the NFL has changed and it is not going to change back in our lifetimes to the “Mean Joe Greene” days of football.

I just hope when it comes to Winston being treated the same way the same flags (and penalties) are applied. Nothing worse than a double standard in the NFL.

  19. First of all, the hit wiped out a no-gain play on 3rd-and-10. Browns went on to score a FG on the drive. Second, I like how some of the ‘Macho Man Randy Savage’ posters here call this a ‘nothing’ hit – by a 6-4 310-lb monster DT. Ever play any football? The hits feel a lot worse than they look on TV, or from the stands. Macho Man fans? Yeah, pro wrestling is all rehearsed, but they take as much actual abuse as any football player does.
Suh had a good step-and-a-half to react after the ball left Mayfield’s hand – plenty of time to pull back on that push. Suh is known for not paying attention to the ball. He wants to make the hit, anyway – he doesn’t care whether the ball is there, or not. His game is intimidation. He’ll continue to get penalized and fined for it, just like he always has.
As for the league ‘pussifying’ the game? Well, bare knuckle boxing used to be a big (and legal) thing. Fights to the death used to be a legal thing. The line keeps getting moved back. Don’t like it? Might want to get yourself a Delorean, some plutonium, and a flux capacitor, then.
