the shit 2021 draft class
The "run it back" year. Drafting for immediate need AND for post-Brady lean years.
not excusing just pointing out the flaw.
Glazers probably excuse
were they drafting for immediate need?
No, they clearly weren't. But the loon has to perpetuate a narrative.
The Saints are already out of cap jail in less than 2 years.
Saints are paying well over $100M in dead cap this year.
That's the definition of cap jail.
Well they didn't stop signing players that is for sure.

And, they’re still ranked nearly dead last in active roster spending.
Again, they’re the epitome of cap jail.
Arians was good for sure but not even he could coach up the shit 2021 draft class
The 2021 draft class is one of the worst ones I can recall.
- 2014 was bad with the exception of Mike Evans.
- 2015 was OK overall. Marpet was a find. I wanted the Buccaneers to take him after watching his tape.
- 2016 was low grade dog food. Taking a kicker in the second round?
- 2017 Godwin. Had Licht ever had a good draft class or just one guy hits, and we given him credit?
- 2018 Vea - great, Davis and Jones passable
I think Licht is mid at best. I think a coach made him look better.
the 2016 draft was one of the worst in NFL history. my god that was brutal. a botched top 11 pick in Hargreaves, noah spence amounted to nothing and trading up for a kicker who ended up being dogshit. brutal.
and yeah 2014 through 2017 landed Evans, Marpet, and Godwin. Would argue Donovan Smith was serviceable. The rest...ehh
i am just saying 2018 through 2020 drafts landed 13 guys who all contributed to the Superbowl run (Vea, Jones, Davis, Cappa, Whitehead, White, SMB, Dean, Edwards, Nelson, Miller, Wirfs, and AWJ). Not all of these guys ended up being a success but all were good contributors to a solid core of that 2020 squad
the 2021 draft was Licht's 2nd worst draft only because of how bad 2016 was.
2022 through 2025 have been mid. Sure we landed alot of starters but for a .500 squad. Not exactly great.
A lot of the players from the 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 have not hit their stride yet so I am not worried about these drafts. McCollum and Otton have more room to grow but both are going to be solid 2s in this league for a long time which is why Licht opted to resign both. However it was an interesting uses of cap space when the Bucs do not have a clear 1 at CB now or at TE which is why the talk of drafting a TE in round 1 is still on the table.
That is diametrically different how Rich Mckay would do business as he would sign his 1 to a long term deal and let the 2 walk and replace the 2 with a draft pick. That is why Lynch was the mainstay at safety for so long and the other starting safety spot opposite of Lynch was a revolving door.
For the 2023 class they really need to take the next step up because they are in danger of being just average which means they can be replaced with this upcoming 2026 draft class or even free agents off the streets.
Too soon for the 2024 and 2025 draft classes for people to be passing judgement on them honestly. Have to give them another year or two to really see what you have (Braswell is the exception he is just not good enough).

Given that Loomis backloads their contracts the Saints don't seem to be phased by it.

Alldawy, you post some really confusing stuff. You kind of have to pick a lane, right?
You started by saying the Saints were out of cap jail in two years.
Now, celebrating Loomis back loading contracts
BUT simultaneously suggesting the Bucs dont really have a cap or cash issue? They do precisely because they are trying NOT to adopt the Loomis or, for example, Eagles approach.
so you're back to the beginning and SR's article you said was wrong about adhering to a tight cash/cap budget . .. which is sort of undeniable by virtue of this fee agency, right?
There is a way (Saints/Eagles) for the Bucs to have the FA roster of your dreams BUT if they obviously refuse to do it then they refuse to do it, right?

Saints don't believe in cap jail so from their view they are out which is why they handed the contracts they did this off season.
Ironically the Bensons don't have as much money as the Glazers but they are more willing to hand out contracts that would make the Glazers blush. The Bucs even during the Rich McKay days would use roster bonuses far more than upfront guaranteed money and that roster bonus becomes accelerated to the cap once the players is on the roster. Other NFL teams avoid that and give upfront signing bonuses which is acceleated to the cap and spready over the life of the contract.
Glazers have always been tight with guaranteed money so it doesn't matter if you are flush with cap it doesn't matter if you don't hand out guaranteed money upfront.
Hence, why they've been in cap jail for years.
I would like to see the Bucs hand contracts out that the Saints did this off season next off season but with the way the Glazers are acting and how they are doubting on Mayfield it is not looking good.
Is Licht cooked? The defensive signings so far have been solid with Roches coming back too. Roches, Robinson, Rozeboom, Anzelone, Muhammed and Killebrew. Offense this off season has been a shit show on the other hand. So Licht has a lot of work to do as it has been a mixed bag.
Fundamentally this roster lacks a true X receiver and 1 CB which is why this is still a 8-9 team even if Mayfield magic materializes.

I dont know that they fill the "true X" but they have said they need another CB

I think he means the premature Ill advised 50m per year contract that they should be giving baker. I guess he wants it this offseason instead of the preferred next offseason
Some are chalking up his ass second half play to an injury, but I think that’s a tough leap of faith you are asking the glazers to take to hand out $250M to a top 20 QB
LVD has come out and said that Mayfield was playing heavily injured.
https://www.joebucsfan.com/2026/04/lavonte-david-baker-mayfield-struggled-with-significant-injuries/
Retired Bucs linebacker Lavonte David shed light on that yesterday during his sitdown with The Arena. “The season’s over now, I can talk about it,” David said.
“Man, Baker was going through a lot, bro,” David said. “Baker had a lot of injuries that you didn’t expect a quarterback to play through. You know what I’m saying? He had the oblique injury, he had the shoulder injury, he had a lot of things. You know, ankle injury, knee injury. … He was really trying to push through and really trying to be the player that we needed him to be.”
Hence, why they've been in cap jail for years.

The Bucs could have signed some defenders to long term deals this off seson OR extended Mayfield. But they have chosen to do neither and that is a problem moving forward for 2027 they have lined up a reckoning for their roster makeup.
I am not against making Mayfield play 2026 but if you are going to do that you need to surround Mayfield with better talent.

When does Bowles contract expire ?
