https://www.profootballrumors.com/2026/06/health-a-factor-in-baker-mayfield-extension-talks

On its face, people might wonder how health can be considered a factor dragging down value for a quarterback who has started 51 of a possible 51 regular season games behind center since joining the Buccaneers. While that’s true, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Mayfield has been the picture of health. In fact, just last year, he suffered a shoulder sprain in his non-throwing should that limited him but didn’t hold him out. Following the injury, the team would go on to lose four of its last six games to just barely miss the playoffs. The year before saw Mayfield play through an Achilles injury suffered in a Week 13 matchup.

The team has Super Bowl aspirations, but that ultimate goal will be extremely difficult to attain if the driver of their offense continues to blow tires down crucial stretches of the season. The Buccaneers see it as an aspect of the game that Mayfield tends to neglect. His aggressive, sometimes ill-advised scrambles over the years will continue to have greater and greater effects on his health as he gets older each season. Bowles told the media that, while Mayfield “makes some great scrambles…understanding how to get down and putting himself out of harm’s way” will be crucial to the team’s success moving forward.

Mayfield was a let down the stretch which is why he needs to focus.

Lavonte David after he retired a couple fo months ago on Baker Mayfield injuries:

“Man, Baker was going through a lot, bro. Baker had a lot of injuries that you didn’t expect a quarterback to play through. You know what I’m saying? He had the oblique injury, he had the shoulder injury, he had a lot of things. You know, ankle injury, knee injury. . . . He was really trying to push through and really trying to be the player that we needed him to be."

So unless you think David is a liar or think injuries don’t matter.  Please stop.

Then Mayfield needs to do the mature thing and sit if he is injured and learn from his mistakes.  Harming the team's ability to win didn't help and in the process it does more harm to himself.  When Mayfield didn't sit while playing hurt in Cleveland  it almost derailed his career.

if Bowles had any balls as a HC he would bench Mayfield until he was healed properly.

Now this is something I can get behind.  For sure the adults in the room should have had him sit out and let Teddy try to guide us to victory.

So let’s stop as a collective pretending that Baker’s play had something to do with him “slipping”.  Our failures last season are because of two things.  Baker was injured to the point where his play was hampered significantly and our defense sucked at defending mid-range passes.

Bowles simply did not like how Grizzard called the ground game and fired him. Instead of inventing reasons people should be more upfront and frank of their true intentions.

lol, wut?

Grizzard is now a Bowles victim?

We are going to find out.

Eagles dumped AJ Brown and hired a green OC in Mannion to team with Grizzard.  If the Eagles passing game looks better than the Bucs then yes Bowles looks like the biggest fat retard in the room.

Realistically with a green OC and trading away AJ Brown the Eagles passing game should take a step back this year but this is wait and see moment.

Jalen Hurts will have some role in that…but fortunately for him, Grizz won’t be calling the plays. It seems that not even the Eagles trusted Grizz in that capacity, nor any other NFL team.

It is interesting, and by your logic, that if the rest of the league thought 2026 was mostly on Baker, Grizz should have at least gotten another opportuniy as an OC, right?

from PFT article on Mahomes deal and its impact on other QBs

Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers.

He has said talks on a deal that would extend his $33.3 million per year contract are nowhere close to where he thought they’d be. The Buccaneers could tag him in 2027, or they could let him hit the open market.

Some think the Bucs wouldn’t use the franchise tag; with a 2026 cap number of $39.975 million, Mayfield’s 2027 franchise tender would be at least $47.97 million. There’s a sense in some circles that the Bucs believe they’ll ultimately offer him more than anyone would in free agency, if a new deal isn’t done before Mayfield’s self-imposed deadline of the start of training camp.

with this comment and your one about other coaches like Zampese, you seem to think that Grizz's problem was only the construction of the plays? How about play CALLING.

If Grizz was a victim of Bowles because he could not deliver the run games Bowles wanted, with a makeshit O-line no less, hed be an OC somewhere else.

and talk about a leap - better 2026 pass game in Philly = Grizz a victim of Bowles in 2025?? yikes.  Mannion is a QB coach pass game guy. How about he teaches jalen to thrwo the ball to the open target? Thats not Grizz = Bowles victim lmao

Other part is understanding where we are as a team. With bowles we are not contenders. If we have moved on from him then I would like our chances better. I fear even with the better defense that we are still middle of the pack team. It's pointless to extend him as long as he's our hc. If we invest into a QB like baker and have the same defense then it's more of the same. A lot of money for mediocre football that's not necessarily all on baker. But will still get some of the blame. I don't see him signing here with bowles here unless it is for big contract. If we change that up for the better I could see him signing at a better deal than what we offer now. He's gotta set himself up for success too.

In fact it tells me everything I need to know that they have Zampese now despite the hiring of Robinson.

Considering you had no idea that he was on the Falcon's last year, and thought he was on our coaching staff, I'm take your opinion (and so should everyone else) with a grain of salt.

Posted by: @alldaway

Robinson too me is just another yes man like Grizzard was for Bowles to meddle with on offense.

24 hours ago, you claimed that Grizz being a yes man, and that Bowles had to help the OC's was...IN YOU WORDS...nothing but smoke.

You're flip-flopping more than the slow (ham and eggers) people from Philly.

Like honestly, why would you?  To save money??

Holy shit.

The Doak Dorks finally started learning basic finance.

I'm shocked their heads didn't explode.

Correct.

16 months ago, the Glazers made a decision that closed the "small window" that we actually had.

You should delete this app and go learn the basic finances of the game.

Anyone with a basic Smithian/Keynesian economic understanding could see that the Buc’s have the upper hand and waiting to sign him is the most prudent way to go about this.

But go ahead and indulge in the nancy boy drama of the off-season.

yeah it's pretty clear cut with Baker essentially having no power here.

If Baker would have had a good 2025 season then yes, with 2 years of excellence under his belt, all of us would be turning on the front office to reward the man

But giving how he played last year, his 5th worst season of 8 in the NFL; yeah you dont reward that prematurely.

some of us are saying to be smart about a situation with an up and down journeyman QB coming off his worst season as a Buc entering age 31 season and with all the leverage; doesn’t mean we are anti Baker

badabing, you keep posting stuff like this.

YES, you are saying be smart BUT your premise for that is that Mayfield IS the last 11 games of 2025, right?

That is "anti-Mayfield" in the sense that you dont think he is 2023 or 2024 Mayfield or even somewhere in between, right? This is why Biggs agrees with you.  Biggs is Trask-loving Mayfield is "consistently inconsistent" QB who missed "wide open receivers running. free" in 2023 and who dragged the 2023 run game down by "sending the RBs the wrong way."

Come on, Badading admit you are actually Biggs-like anti Mayfield. Not mocking you if that is your view. Just trying to make sure your view on Mayfield is crystal clear. I say you are Biggs-lite?

hey man, you are talking to the same poster who started a "Baker Mayfield appreciation thread" after the 2023 season.  While i was applauding his pro bowl nomination, other posters were dismissing it; some of those posters the same ones attacking me for my "Let Baker bake for another season" take.

The expectations were raised after our first non brady playoff win in 2 decades....and boy did Baker not disappoint in 2024! My man put up top 5 numbers!

then last year happened and i couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing. It must be what the Cleveland Browns fans felt when Baker was YO YOing each year there...

Baker is our best chance to win in 2026 and 2027.  I think ultimately a deal gets done, but i'm suggesting that depending how he plays in 2026 will determine that

  • He plays like last 11 games of 2025 - No thanks, we can sign a cheaper veteran option to bridge way with our top 10 draft pick at QB.  Like why spend $50M a year on a guy that has us with losing records anyway
  • He plays like first 6 games and 2024 season - Hey now....5 years, $275M.....with pleasure!
  • If he plays somewhere in the middle, which is likely the real Baker....yeah i'm probably not expecting a championship out of a Baker led team, particularly with a cap hit twice the amount but as many suggest, i can live with Baker as our guy the next 4 years.  We certainly, as a franchise, have done worse....but i just think we are in the Pittsburgh Steelers area of....yeah never really take this team seriously.

Baker playing with a chip on his shoulder....is that not the best form of Baker?...why would we take that away from us fans in 2026....he didn't earn a contract extension with his play last year.

Bakers play started to slip in the Detroit prime time game and carried through the Rams prime time game.....

prime time....not great in his career as a Buc, losing to back-up QBs on the regular...

in any event, he was 1-4 before the 6 stretch easy part of schedule and "injured Baker"

his numbers were comparable in the 5 game stretch versus the 6 game stretch.

Baker being "injured" a cop out...but maybe blaming a make shift offensive line more reasonable.

in either event, i'd like to see that all of you are right.....and that i was wrong for ever doubting Baker.

and ultimately if he goes out there in 2026 and tosses 34 touchdowns, 10 INTs...then hell...at least we got a piece of mind and it didn't cost us a penny because Baker wasn't signing a deal off his 2025 performance anyway.

Yeah, sacrifice the QB because he won games on his own, then saddle him with the results…somehow doesn’t quite look logical…but you guys do you.

We’ll see how it plays out.

you mean like the Washington playoff game where he fumbled the ball in the 4th quarter on our own 13 yard line.  We were up 17-13 at that point. Don't think he won that game on his own?

Guy was a turnover machine in that 4 game losing streak last year (NO, ATL, CAR, MIA).  5 INT, 1 fumble lost. One might suggest the opposite of winning games.

And nobody is sacrificing him.  Why are you so dramatic.  You act like we are saying we dont want Baker in 2027.  We just want our franchise to be smart about it, which currently they are...

luckily for you, we are a poorly run franchise so i could see you still getting your wish this summer.
