Mayfield would be head/shoulders better than Purdy if he outproduced Purdy in Grizz's offense and Purdy is in Shanahan's with CMC.

I’d say Mayfield is better.

You'd say that? I never would have guessed.

They are the same tier QB. Debating who is better is splitting hairs

I don't disagree. Each guy has pros and cons over the other, but neither is clearly better than the other.

exactly, i think it's fair to say, if you are looking at last 3 years body of work, Baker probably gets the edge but basically right next to each other on the tiers.

if you look at last year, one might give the edge to Purdy and his injury induced year

Heading into this season, probably ranked like this with tiers 2 and lower very fluid. Tiers are not right to left but rather groupings.

Tier 1 - Top 5

Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Matt Stafford

Tier 2 - Top 10

Dak Prescott, Jared Golf, Trevor Lawrence, Drake Maye, Justin Herbert

Tier 3 - Top 15

Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, Brock Purdy, Baker Mayfield, Jordan Love

Tier 4 - Top 20

Jalen Hurts, Bo Nix, Jayden Daniels, Aaron Rodgers, CJ Stroud

Darnold might have moved himself into tier 2 if he can keep playing like he has the last two years. Goff used to be called a tier 3/4 QB for a long time so it is possible.  There is speculation that Hurts is on the clock with a new offense and Eagles FO wants to see how he responds. Jalen can probably climb into tier 3 again if he shows improvement.

There’s no scenario where TLaw is better than Baker all things being equal.

Dak also deserves to be in the top tier.

I thought Darnold had a great 2024 but a very pedestrian 2025

now, don’t get me wrong, he played well in the playoffs and went toe to toe with Stafford in the nfc champ game so need to give credit there

he’s in the mayfield tier for sure and it’s very fluid. I mean Darnold or mayfield could be as high as 6th but consistently have to have them in the teens

and for the knees, Lawrence was unreal the second half of the year and unlike baker gets a second season with coen so maybe he builds off it

otherwise I always thought Lawrence was over-rated but can’t diminish those last 11 games he dominated in 2025!

Maye played tier 1 last year

Herbert is tier 1

Lawrence isn't not tier 2 he's tier 3... I mean shit he could have been tier 4 had he not played well last year

Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts are too low

Cj Stroud played awful last year but I would still put him with Baker

Maye played tier 1 last year

With Mahomes, Burrows, and Jackson missing time - maybe.

Posted by: @firebowles2026

Herbert is tier 1

I haven't heard anybody outside of San Diego or Eugene say Herbert is top-5 QB. The 26 TD to 13 Int last season certainly doesn't support that. Neither do his other stats.

9th in yards

7th in TD's

4th most Int's

14th in comp percentage

13th in YPA

15th in QB rating

And, again, that's with Mahomes, Burrows, and Jackson not being on top of those lists. Hell, he and Baker has pretty similar seasons. Do you think Baker is tier 1 too?

yeah i don't get the Justin Herbert love.  I list him in top 10 but that's more so the down-ish years that Baker, Purdy, Hurts, Daniels Love, etc. all had; he is solidly in tier 2 which i said was fluid as 10 guys could be #6 through 15 any given stretch of weeks.

so suggest he's tier 1 is a bit of a stretch

and why does he always come up short in the playoffs

2025 - New England - L 16-3 - 159 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 1 fumble lost

2024 - Houston - L 32-12 - 242 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT,

2022 - Jacksonville - L 31-30, 273 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, team was up 27-0 in the second quarter.  Leader of offense, loser mentality

say what you will but 0-3 and the offense only really showing up 4 seasons ago with less TDs than games isn't ideal.

Agreed.

Putting Lawrence in a superior ranking tier to Baker is embarrassingly bad.

another season like 2023  . . . then it becomes a question of….can you win with this guy and what’s the market rate

2023?

He threw for 4000 yard and 28TDs to 10 INTs and a 95 rating and he did that in a zero play-calling experience Canales offense.

Bryce Young's BEST season in an experienced play calling Canales offense is 3000 yds 23 tds versus 11 INTs and an 80ish rating

The all 22 was not good

"All 22 not good" is sort of the garden variety troll-y retort (welcome back JC), like "he's sending RBs the wrong way" or "there was a receiver running  wide open" to then watch and see it was the non-play side deep route.

He played even better the next season with better play calling and a healthy o-line and real run game. Weird, right?

He played less well the next season after that with now-fired Grizz calling plays, a decimated O-line and lesser run game. Even weirder, right?

#11games!

On the Red Board, stats are truth . .  except when they are complete season stats . . then "film" is truth.

Tier 2 - Top 10

Trevor Lawrence

Tier 3 - Top 15

 Baker Mayfield

Both under Coen

Lawrence  60.9% 4,007 yds 29TDs 12 INTs 41 sacks Rushed for 400 yards and 9 TDs. Team finished 13-4. Top 9 defense.#1 in takeaways. #18 rushing attack (yds)

Mayfield 71.4% 4,500 yds, 41TDs 16 INTS, 40 sacks. Rushed for 380s and 3 TDs. Team finished 10-7. #17 defense #20 in takeaways. Top 5 rushing attack (yds)

I think Lawrence is roughly $55M APY.  Mayfield, $33M APY?

Every NFL team needs a QB.  Having a GOOD QB is a huge advantage. Hard to imagine the Bucs having all the success they have had with $million, one year Mayfield and then letting him go to save $

WHO is the "looks better on All-22" alternative? And what do the Bucs do with all the money they will save?

while my rankings would like to factor in also 3 years...given hard to keep Mahomes out of the top tier given his down 2025; just based off recency bias, Lawrence had the better 2025 in total and really came into his own the last 7 games last year.  18 touchdowns  to 4 INTs with a 7-0 record.  Baker last 7 games - 9 TDs, 8 INTs with a 2-5 record.

so heading into 2026, one of them has Coen, the other doesn't.  This isn't a world of make belief.  It's.....given real world heading into 2026....yes Lawrence is ranked higher.

If you would have asked me that heading into 2025, no frickin way Lawrence is anywhere close to Baker as Baker easily in the top 10.

article by Phil Perry

NFL quarterback tiers with ranking of all 32 starters for 2026 season – NBC Sports Boston

this guy clearly overrated Maye being a Patriots fan but all the other QBs, you kind of dont really question.  He had Baker at 20.  I'd say the only egregious guy having ahead of him was Kyler Murray but all else, kind of can be debated, no?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This one by Chris Simms - had Baker at #10, which eye brow raising looking at Dak Prescott numbers and Jared Goff numbers and having Baker ahead of them but i digress, you can certainly argue a Baker bounce back getting him back to top 10

2026 NFL QB Rankings: Quarterback analysis, breakdowns from Chris Simms heading into OTAs - NBC Sports

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colin Cowherd with his top 10, Baker didn't make the cut

Colin Cowherd ranks 10 best NFL QBs entering 2026 season - On3

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this one had Baker at 17

Ranking all 63 starting quarterbacks from the 2025 NFL season

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this one also had Baker at 17

NFL Power Rankings: Ranking projected starting quarterbacks for 2026 season

---------------------------------------------

and i know homers get upset...but i am trying to be non biased.  Of course, i am tougher on my favorite team because i hold them to higher standard, but it's not ridiculous for me to have Baker outside the top 10 or guys like Lawrence ahead of him when pundits who are not Buc fans are saying the same thing.

i agree in spirit that Lawrence is over-rated and been mid for most of his career but he came alive the end of last year, so if that carries over to this season, the potential is there.

Nobody wants 2024 Baker more than me...trust me guys but maybe with Browning, Baker would be best just to rest a game if he's hurt because that showing against the cream puff part of the schedule made him lose a contract extension.
