CBS

"One bad thing for the Buccaneers: The Bucs better get off to a hot start, because things get a lot tougher in Week 4. The Bucs face the Packers at home that week, but then they have to follow that up with a Thursday road game in Dallas. As if that’s not bad enough, they have the Steelers, Panthers, Falcons and Bears after that. They’re just 2-5 in their past seven against the Falcons and the other three teams on the list all made the playoffs last year. If the Bucs can get to their Week 10 bye with a winning record, that would certainly be a moral victory."

It will become more clear as we get closer to kickoff but, Bain changes everything.

While Bain has potential, what exactly are you expecting out the kid with the "changes everything" comment?

two points:

1 - What is your response to Max Crosby on the Raiders or Myles Garret on the Browns?  Browns allowed 22.3 PPG last year while Raiders were at 25.4 PPG.  The lowly Bucs?  24.2 PPG.  Browns were 14th best, Bucs 20th, and Raiders 25th.  It wouldn't appear that these proven guys turned their teams into perennial Superbowl contenders

2 - You think back to Bucs when they drafted Sapp and Brooks, joining a defense with Nickerson and Lynch.  The defense finished 27th overall that year in YPG and 12th in PPG. This compared to 21st and 20th overall a year prior....so this was with 2 premier "change everything" type guys.  I expect the defense to be improved but i don't see it magically becoming top 10 given the current roster

Great post.

 1. I am hoping against hope that we have health on our side for once on the defensive side of the ball. We need Calijah to be a factor this seaon and he most certainly will be if he can stay healthy. Also David Walker will be like found money if he can contribute in the OLB rotation.  I just feel like Diaby gets unleashed with Bain in place.  Diaby is in a contract year, and I could see 12 out of him this season.

2. These guys coming in are more pro ready than they were 30 seasons ago.  I expect Bain, Trotter, and Scott, to all have immediate impact on the confuse and destroy aspect of our defense.  Super curious as to how they are going to use Scott.  Also, I wouldn't say "magically" as it relates to a team with Tykee, AWJ, Trotter, Vea, and Bain on in.  There are some players here.

The realistic expectation is probably in between.

Bain might have a relatively modest statistical impact on his own, but with the others they might turn around one of the key problems of 2025 which was toughness and resolve.  That alone is probably enough to help the 2026 defense outperform the 2025 defense and maybe even by a good margin.  The core existing players on defense, people like Vea and Smith and Diaby, also probably want to get that 2025 stink off themselves too, so they are not starting from zero.

Still think the early games have key significnace in how the season goes.

i get that part.  There is no doubt the defense should be improved with the additions of Kancey back, Robinson, Bain Jr, Anzalone, Rozeboom, Al-Quaidin, etc.  We did lose David and Dean so it's not quite all additive but in any event no excuses not to be improved off last year.

that being said, i would have thought with the additions of Hasson Reddick, Morrison, Parrish, etc that we would have been improved over 2024 and that didn't quite materialize. Bucs ranked 18th and 16th respectively in YPG and PPG in 2024 compared to 19th and 20th respectively in 2025.

Could they jump into the top 12 defenses?  I think so but i'll believe it when i see it.  Worried about the depth upfront. Kancy appears injury prone, Vita entering his age 31 season, same with Robinson.  That's one key injury away from that game plan being shot to hell

I also think Robinson won't be in a position to "shorten the game" or whatever it was we were trying to fucking do in the first Panthers matchup.

We have a good OC, one who will help the defense by keeping them off the field a bit.  It's tough not to get excited about this offense.

while i agree that Zac Robinson should be an upgrade over Grizz, to call him good/Coen 2.0 remains to be seen

the guy was only an OC for two years

Falcons 2025 PPG - 20.8 which ranked 24th in the league

Falcons 2024 PPG - 22.9 which ranked 13th in the league

This could simply be the tale of the quarterback as he had a better QB in 2024 with washed Kirk Cousins versus a "clear not the guy" in Michael Penix in 2025.

I'm just cautious as to what to blame here as i know many on this board tend to blame the OC

Not that is matters but, McVay prefers Robinson over Cohen.

Who doesn't? Leonard Cohen's offensive schemes are archaic.

haha i just can't keep up....Brady's last year where he couldnt take a hit was Lefty's fault; Baker playing like garbage in the last 65% of the season (see what i did there!) is Grizz fault, but Robinson having mid at best numbers is the QBs fault!

all kidding aside, obviously Brady and Mayfield have shown that they are capable with other OCs where the likes of Cousins (falling off) and Penix have not; my comment was more in jest :)

the 2024 Bucs boasted a QB with top 5 numbers and entering the next season as a top 10 guy. We had a top 5 offense.

the 2025 season so the Bucs regress in all categories while Coen made Jacksonville QB go from 18/20 to a top 10 guy.

is that the bar for Robinson?

We all saw what you did there.

and I agree, Pennix may make the Tua signing look 65% smarter.

At least we’re trending towards optimistic.
