I think this is just a false narrative talking point for the idiots like Mel Kiper. I would rather have a guy that had short arms and a never-ending motor with a mean streak than a guy with the longest arms that takes plays off.
Short arms better at the bench. Get that leverage and center of gravity advantage with good technique but Bain might struggle with some tackles that are long armed
You may be right, but Bain having had a Jason Taylor at D-Line coach - who specifically worked with both of his his short armed edges on maximizing how to counter long-armed tackles - gives them an “edge” against working through this problem. It wasn’t an unknown problem. I saw Jason Taylor’s pre-draft interview about both Bain & Mesidor - and heard them both specifically asking to be coached on ways to work against that very topic.Short arms better at the bench. Bain’s power and motor made Mesidor better. A deployment of Al Quadin Mohamed on one side & Rueben Bain on the other…could be all kinds of trouble.
I think there are a lot of factors that go into making a great player. Some of them are physical traits. However, there are many physical specimens that got NFL front offices all excited to wash out as flops. Mike Mamula is a perfect example of a player who had all the measurables but failed to live up to the hype. He was not as bad as many believe, but the Buccaneers got the better end of the trade with the Eagles.
