Haha we can't put it past the Glazers tho. We're likely to get him or gruden and like it!

Great.

So, we choose between a root canal or a direct kick to the balls.

Guess we do both and keep Bowles around for another season.

$20M a year?

FFS...

Who cares?  It's not part of the salary cap.  It's not your money. It's the Glazers'.  I'm sure they're happy you care about their money so much.  The only reason money matters to the fans is the salary cap.

Hypothetically, lets say the Bucs fire Bowles at the bye week.  The reason would be to try to salvage the season. If you aren't trying to salvage something out of the season then the best course of action is to not fire Bowles.

You can't change the offensive system in the middle of the season and ask Baker to learn yet another system during the season.

Look we're married to the main players on the team.  They aren't going anywhere. We don't need to bring in another offensive system midseason and try to teach it to Mayfield.

If you want to change horses midstream it's not so your new horse will get washed away.  Hire Tomlin and worry about getting a new OC after the season.  Is it going to happen?  It's a longshot.  But one thing we don't need is to fire Bowles and put his assistants in charge of the defense and have a new offensive coach revamp the offense in mid-season. That's just going to bring more disaster and you might as well stick with Bowles if you are planning on losing.

Yeah.

But, why pay Tomlin $20M a year, when you can pay Gruden $50M a year!

Well, who is the right coach? I don't know, but if you find one pay them!  The Bucs have had their success by bringing in a big name HC, and those guys don't come cheap.  If you have to pay them $50 mil so what?  It's a drop in the bucket with the money this league is making for these owners.

Arians was $5 million a year.

True.  I stand corrected on that.  But there are coaches like John Harbaugh who do make $20 mil so that's what you'd have to pay Tomlin.

With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about firing Bowles, there isn't a lot of common sense talk about what kind of coach would be right if there was a firing during the bye week.  What is the reason you are bringing in that coach?  I have to presume they'd be trying to salvage something out of the season, otherwise why do it?  And if that's the case then who would be the right person for that task? You can't fire the OC in midseason. That would probably just make things worse.  Might as well bring in the old speech from Animal House.

I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

We're just the guys to do it...LET'S DO IT!

offense, offense, offense!

5 teams remain undefeated.  Reid with Chiefs, Kubiak with Raiders, Brady with Bills, Shanahan with 49ers, and O'Connell with Vikings.  What do they all have in common?  Not only do they have offensive minded head coaches but they are also their play callers

Another 11 teams are 2-1.  Eagles, Jaguars, Steelers, Lions, Bears, Broncos, Browns, Bengals.  What do you notice?  all offensive minded head coaches (3 other 2-1 teams include Giants, Seahawks, and Ravens which are non offensive minded)

Hiring Tomlin, Flores, Saleh, etc. would be a brain dead move.  Same with dinosaur Bill Bellechick.

Imagine Kubiak on the Bucs right now.  Baker likely playing alot better and the Bucs likely 2-1 at worst.

And, there's not a lot of common sense being used if you think they'll fire him during the bye week.

I would prefer the owners not do foolish things, with their money and otherwise, to the team I root for.

You're clearly a deep thinker, so let me ask you a question. Let's say they pull Tomlin out of the booth with a 6-year, $120M contract - that's $20M a year at your thoughtful suggestion, and later admitting you don't know that he's the right coach.  Now let's say Tomlin completely shits the bed and wins 6 games in two seasons. Do think the owners will cut an $80M check to send the failure of a hire packing? I'm guessing not.

The dollar amount of the contract matters, for a variety of reasons.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if they fired Bowles in season

i think they let him finish out the season, 3-14, and then "promote" him to a front office position in January, the most dissatisfying way to fire him for the fans lol

they are not salving this season, even tho 1 game out of first per Bowles, with the Baker injury as shit as he was playing, this season is lost.

Daniels would have to be a prodigy.

Yes but the length of the contract matters more.  They are businesspeople and don't want to look like they change their mind at the drop of a hat.  Thats why Bowles is still the coach.  They just signed him to an extension and didn't want to look like idiots by firing him such a short time later.  So yes it would mean something if the Glazers signed Tomlin to such a long term deal as you propose.

I think we are on the same page in one aspect - that when it comes to how much rope a coach is given it's more the length of the contract that matters as opposed to the amount of money per year, even when we know that a HC rarely serves out the entirety of his deal.  If you give a HC six years your going to expect he'll be here for at least four.  If you give a guy three years he might last two and so forth.

The dollars are all relative.  Gruden was one of the top paid NFL coaches when he was with the Bucs so he was like the $20 million coaches today. He (and Allen) signed three year extensions and then were fired, so the Bucs were willingly on the hook for top HC dollars.

I dont think they go for Tomlin, but if they did he'd be in the $16-20 million range because that is the veteran HC range.

And if they went for the hottest OC candidate they aren't far from there.  Klint Kubiak signed a five year contract reportedly AAV of $12 million. Ben Johnson is $13, I think.  OConnell also $13 and those two contracts are a couple years old.
