There's nothing inherently wrong with the pistol formation, but the Falcons are running the ball 70% of the time when lined up that way, and they're passing the ball 93% of the time when lined up in shotgun.
"We don't feel that way," Robinson responded when asked about the predictability of his offense. "I feel like sometimes when you have these types of games as coaches, you say, ‘Ok, do we need to pull back? How can we pull back to simplify and maybe we're trying to do much from a schematic standpoint.’ That's always what we're looking inward as coaches is like, ‘OK, maybe we put too much on the plate, maybe we're trying to scheme too much and we need to simplify it.’
But there is more.
The Falcons clearly use analytics when making decisions as an organization. It doesn't take a PHD in statistics to figure out 93% of the time and 70% of the time. Whether Robinson feels his play calling has been predictable or not is irrelevant.
It has been.
The good news for Robinson and the Falcons is that it's an easy fix. Chart your plays and avoid trends. I guarantee the defense is doing it against the offense.
The Atlanta Falcons have weapons all over the field, and a better run/pass balance based on formation will go a long way to improving the offense.
It took the media calling him out for him to stop being lazy and do his job. But he is the same lazy SOB like he was in ATL.
As a long time Bucs fan two thumbs down. 100% you lost me with this hire.
I think A LOT of it had to do with his limitations he had at QB.
Especially with Penix.
Interesting thanks for posting
as long as he maintains Grizz's propensity to call a run play on 2nd and 10, i will be happy
Like DH pointed out penix to baker is like a Volkswagen beatle to a jeep grand Cherokee.
That write up is after the "0" game, 30-0 loss to the Panthers. I think if you look at the Penix pick 6 in that game thats not really on the OC. They put up 34 the next week.
very hard to say either way
Dead man walking coach hire. No one worth a damn is coming here when they know Bowles is getting the guillotine next year. Bunch of losers hiring more losers.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see what the Bucs O looks like. Obviously we know Penix couldn't play under center at all and Kirk was a statue so they were severely limited.
Unlike some on this board I will actually be rooting for the team this year even though i'm incredibly frustrated with them retaining Bowles.

Watch the Bucs return to the playoffs and the Glazers extend Bowles. . . . and Licht
The Red Board would explode.

I think the problem is that we know the team should be in playoffs with the roster they have had. Afterwards when they have to play solid teams... Bowles is cooked. If playoffs is fun for the glazers then a mediocre playoff team they shall get. Sad thing is we see it's capable of more. Thats why the head explodes. What else could it possibly be?

I'm not sure I agree with this take. I think Penix suffered the same way Baker suffered where these aren't world beater athletes with great height and arm strength... They need a great system that is tailored to them.
And there's only a handful of coordinators that design plays based on their personnel instead of trying to make the personnel work to their plays/design.
I worry that Robinson is just another Grizz or maybe even worse.
There's 15 QBs in this this league that can crack the top 12 imo with the right scheme/coaching. There's 7-8 QBs that are the obvious best. Then there's 7-8 that are obviously awful.
Eagles
Geese
Pigeons

Again I just do not agree. I don't think Penix will ever live up to his draft slot but he's yet another QB that needs a good system and good line to function.
For example if you paired him with Coen he'd be having a Lawrence type year (injuries not withstanding).

No he wouldn’t.

I mean the Bucs blood in me will always root for them, it’s just hard to be passionate like 2020-mid year 2025
i sort of stopped caring once they lost 3 in a row (no, atl, car) that’s when unofficially knew this team was cooked under Bowles
now players speaking out against him
I will watch them like I did 2009-2019 where there were no expectations.
congrats to glazers and Licht as we are back to that time period
I think the data shows that the Atlanta offense under Zac Robinson actually improved over the last 4 - 5 games when they were forced to turn to aging/immobile Kirk Cousins.
Most believe Penix limited the offense because of some gaps in his development/capability - agree that he is more of a system QB at this stage of his career - but not sure that the “system” he would fit can be effective in the NFL if you don’t have good knees (and I don’t think Atlanta hired Kliff Kingsbury as their OC).
I think QB’s with exposure to NFL offenses are probably better for a McVay style attack - it’s probably a lot to take in as a near rookie QB. They invested in Penix and Cousins, so maybe ATL will hit the restart button on Penix and utilize Cousins a bit more early in the season until they determine if Penix can get accustomed to the offense.
We all know Baker has had a different coordinator every year of his career so far - so he’s seen a lot - and he seems to be a good fit for the McVay “system” that multiple teams are utilizing. When you hear two coaches (Robinson & Coen referenced it in pre-season interviews last season) use the same description for the base concepts being tailored to the strengths of the player (player over plays). For that reason we think that Robinson will be successful with Baker - but that remains to be seen - but it’s just an informed opinion until we see it on the field.
As has been reported, we ended up pursuing Coen because Robinson took himself out of consideration when he selected Atlanta in 2024. However, he was the top of the list at the time.
Still doesn’t help our defense get better…but next season could be a great audition for Robinson as a head coach candidate at the end of next season.
