Read-Option: QB Wins?

On the first page we discussed where Jameis Winston is compared to some of him former No. 1 overall pick counterparts.

It’s clear that Winston has not accomplished the main goal that is placed before quarterbacks, which is getting into the playoffs. All the yards, the touchdowns and the interceptions are signs that either point to encouragement or discouragement, but the goal is wins and the playoffs.

Now, I’m not one to tout “QB wins” as a black-and-white stat for judging quarterbacks, but it does play a part – it’s the bottom line, after all. There are plenty of outside factors beyond the quarterbacks themselves that can affect a win total. The defense, the coaches, the offensive line, the weapons, the organization, all of those things play a part. But, it’s a win-loss league at its core.

The question to you all is: are you pleased where Winston is on his No. 1 pick path? Is he living up to the selection? And more importantly, do you think he will get there?

As we explained on the first page, his injury this year makes things tricky, as does Dirk Koetter’s inability to form a competent, consistent offense. When you take those factors into consideration, perhaps this was Winston’s year to break out. But, I will also say that areas such as decision-making and explosive plays have not improved the way you generally want them to from a No. 1 overall quarterback in their third year – and those have been on Winston.

Is Winston being in between Bradford and Stafford at this point in his path acceptable to you?

Do you think he takes that next step next season?

Does he need a new coach to do so?
