As we head into into the six-week pre-camp lull of NFL news, every outlet is looking for different avenues to get reads and views. NBC Sports is no different, and former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms has taken a look at the mechanics of Jameis Winston’s throwing motion and offered up what he can do to get better in 2019, an obvious critical year for Tampa Bay’s signal caller.

  1. Nice to see Chris Simms doing analysis for NBC. Funny how he questions his decision making at the end – that is the obvious flaw. If he eliminates that the franchise will have its first QB signed to a second contract that it drafted.

  2. No worries Bucs fans the great Bruce Arians is going to fix him just like he did the secondary the great Bruce Arians is going to grow his hand a little bit bigger so he can change his position on the ball.

  3. I thought the knock was his foot work?…pretty sure I read an article about that on PR…footwork causing him to sail long passes or something. Anyway, if all he needs to do is “knock-out the knucklehead stuff” then that should be in BA’s wheelhouse. We’ll see soon enough.

  5. Phil Simms doing an analysis of any QB?
What’s next, Donnie Trump giving a seminar on how to stop twitter bullying or how to improve race relations.
How about Sen. Ted Kennedy coming back and talking to MADD about the importance of not driving when impaired.
Does anyone remember the horrible season Simms was having before his season ended with spleen injury.
    Give me a break.

  6. Got to agree with you there drdneast. Chris Simms critiquing me is not the same as Peyton Manning. Winston is 3x the QB Simms ever was in Tampa. What Jamies needs more than anything is an Oline to allow him to step into the throws vs throwing off of his back foot all the time.

  9. I remember all the talk about people saying Winston’s hand was too small it was right at the borderline to small to be effective in NFL
The Bucs chose to ignore that unwritten Scout rule.

  10. Bob,

Sometimes I try to understand where you are coming from, with some of the things you ramble about. At this point I just choose to accept that you are just a person who is just negative.

To be an effective QB? I’m pretty sure he slings the ball pretty well, he just throws off his back foot a lot due to the offensive line being a turnstile.

  11. Sneedy,
Take a minute and read about the importance of hand size with a quarterback in the NFL. One of the knocks on Winston was he had a small hand.

  12. I was being a little to much smart ass in comments better way to say it.
Jameis is who he is Bruce is not going to fix him he is a QB with 90% rating year in year out.
If you change his style now you will fix one area of throw and hurt another area. His body has developed over many years to his style.
Change the routes to shorter more conservative routes and the yards will drop. DIRK was not stupid he tried everything and always went back to what worked best for Jameis. Bucs have developed there team around a QB that will be 90% RATED in 2019 bank on it.

Ass, there’s your hand size article showing it means something until it doesn’t. That your problem is you think your an expert based off an article. What about the article that says the other article is wrong? What do you do then? Pretend it doesn’t exist and stick to your guns because the article you read is the one that fits your agenda? That’s what Trolls do.

  14. So one of his big problems is hand size?

    I’ll take it!

I’d rather have a QB with great natural talent and ability, a limitless competitive drive, and slightly smaller hands, than say …a QB with huge hands, little drive, and just ‘ok’ talent for that position.

Sure Winston has room to improve, but lets not get spun-up on the pickiest of nits. His hands didn’t seem to hold him back in college, nor do I think they’re to blame for his “under-performance” in the league (quotes used because in my opinion he’s done pretty well under the circumstances).

    Have a great day everyone!

    Go Bucs!!

What moron didn’t listen to Pewter Report hand size expert Buc-Ass-Bob and drafted Mahomes in the first round with hands smaller than Jameis Winston????

  19. Jameis will have a break out year this year. Perhaps this is the year he puts it all together for a 4000 yard season. With previous regime gone along with Fitzmagic, its all in on Jameis. Anew offense built around him and a head coach who believes in him. He has talent around around with solid hands at all positions… now if we can find the right 5 guys to give him 3-5 seconds! That’s the big if. If O-Line solidifies itself and the main cogs can put it all together and stay healthy then I dare say that with new Defensive leadership under White and Suh then this year should be, if nothing else, quite entertaining! I, for one, am ok with that! As Jameis goes so goes the Bucs! Go Jameis and go Buccaneers! I’m just saying…

  20. The only difference between Jameis Winston in 2018 and 2019 is he’s going to cost you 20 million dollars more Smith’s going to be the same exact lineman but he’s going to cost you ten million dollars more and jpp is going to cost you eight million dollars and he’s not there 38 million dollars worth of players you don’t have and you’re going to coach that up you just lost 20% of your cap and you haven’t improved anything you’ve actually gotten worse cuz there’s no jpp every team gets the exact same amount of money to spend on players and the Bucs
Missing 20% of the players they had last year this is not me being negative this is me speaking hard facts and then you’re going up against some teams that spend their money very wise

  21. Please notice I don’t respond to BAB. He wants attention and you guys give it to him! As for Sims not being a pro- bowl QB so he can’t make good suggestions; it doesn’t make sense. If true than BA shouldn’t be the QB Whisperer. He never even played at the pro level.

  22. I’m with drdneast on this “critique” by Simms. He will be remembered in these parts NOT for his football knowledge & quarterback acumen (including footwork, mechanics, etc) but for almost losing his life during a game against the dreaded Pussies. Fortunately he only lost a spleen, not his life.

I liked Chris and like many Bucs QB’s before and after, pulled HARD for his success Good to see him making his way as a football “analyst” and color commentator for NFL games. His dad was quite good at it as well……..

Speaking of Winston and his (hopeful) turnaround…..has anyone considered the possibilities and/or ramifications of Winston’s game suddenly clicking on all cylinders in 2019 – record setting, playoffs, Pro Bowl, maybe more – and then we lose him as an unrestricted free agent in 2020? I realize there’s the Franchise Tag, etc, the thought & sound of that seems almost laughable but it could happen.

PS: Troll BAB, were you related to the Uber driver in Arizona? Or do you hate all Buc players, coaches, owners, managers, training staff (male AND female)??

  23. When my doctor asked me why I chose him I said, “you have small hands”.

Typical of Bob to cherry-pick Chris Simms’ remarks about Jameis. Winston may have his flaws and perhaps even some physical limitations, but one can’t question his desire and work ethic. His “small hands” never hurt his high school or college careers.

Just a mediocre defense and a PK would do wonders without #3 doing a thing differently.

  24. Winston has many good things going for him. IMO, he has 2 major flaws.

    1. He is unable to throw an accurate long ball.
    2. He forces throws which leads to too many interceptions.

The lackluster defensive play contributed to him having to play catch up and expose those two faults. I think he will improve greatly if we have the ability to run the ball more and not be in a position of having to score 50 points a game to win.

Of course, his off the foeldcantics don’t help. He needs to hire a dcisionmaker to be with him 24/7

  25. Ive been stating the low elbow as his greatest mechanical flaw for years. I didn’t pick up on what gets him in that position with the hitch in the throw though. To me, Winston drops the elbow when he’s trying to be pin point accurate. Much like a pitcher whos struggling to find the strike zone, he’s “short-arming” his throws to almost beg for accuracy. It’s a mental flaw that leads to a mechanical flaw. See the target, throw through the target Jameis. No room for doubt, you’ve got the talent. Let the ball go with the confidence it’s going to get there. As a former pitcher I’m surprised he hasn’t made the connection yet.
