The window for teams to begin placing franchise tags on their players opens on Tuesday and according to Ian Rapoport – and as PewterReport.com has reported – Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin likely will get the designation if no long term deal is reached prior to the start of free agency next month.

Even if Godwin is tagged the two sides could work on an agreement for a long-term deal at any point up until mid-July.

The franchise tag amount is around $15.8million for 2021.

Godwin, just 24, has amassed 3,540 yards on 244 receptions and has scored 24 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Buccaneers.

Just sign the man. He’s too damned good to let him get away.

We can tag him since it’s his first time. He will be cheaper than tagging Barrett again.

That’s ridiculous. The Bucs offense had only one “horrific” game during the entire season and offseason – 3 points scored against the Saints, and Godwin played in that game. The defense, of course, gave up 38 points – every bit as “horrific” as the offense. Most of the Bucs 5 losses were NOT due to the offense, but mostly due to the defense, with the “horrific” Saints loss being horrific play by both offense and defense. Chris Godwin is a good receiver, but he mostly disappeared at the end of the regular season and during the playoffs, between playing hurt… Read more »

Completely disagree. The Bucs can make it work with Brady. But the second Brady retires, we’ll need every snap from Godwin. For all those people that think that Miller is a future star, or that Johnson shows promise and is a future star, and that they’ll just automatically put up the production that Godwin did if he leaves, is insane. News flash. Players like Godwin don’t grow on trees. He does everything above average. Everything. And he’s a great teammate and leader, both on and off the field. It will be a HUGE mistake if we let him go

Smart move. This offense looked horrific when he was not in the line up.
See Bears and Giants game if you want to remember that mess. Jayden Mickens and Cyril Grayson as WR 2.

It’s going to be crazy to be rooting to re-sign our own guys for once instead of refreshing twitter to see if X player MIGHT visit Tampa during free agency!

That’s still gonna happen. The Brady effect is real. He’s likely getting an extension which will free up cap space and we’ll go after maybe a Von Miller if Shaq leaves or doesn’t take a deal where he doesn’t break the bank.

Still, give me Shaq over Von Miller. And that’s my point. Usually we are like “Oooh Von Miller, that would be dope”. Now what would be dope is to keep our guy, not replace him. And yes, bring on the Brady effect. Playoff Lenny about to get replaced by Playoff James White.

Hey Sapp, I agree. The problem is that whether or not Shaq stays is not up to the Bucs this time if someone is willing to break the bank to get him. I think we all agree we would rather just keep Shaq.

Quality players will want to play here. But why break up the best team in the league?
That would make zero sense. There is nobody out there who is better than whom we have at any given position who can be had for significantly less cap hit.

Part of me will be mad that I bought Godwin’s jersey in Pewter if he leaves, the other part of me will be happy to have an excuse to buy a D White one in its place

You’d be better off buying a customized Jersey with ur name on it! Then you’ll always have a sweet jersey, but won’t have to worry if a particular player gets cut!

There’s only so many dollars to go around. U can’t blame a player who wants to chase the dollars. U never know when there will be a career ending injury. With Veteran Players, they may have made their money and just want a Ring in place of another huge contract. I understand that too. Having said that, it looks like Shaq, Fournette may be gone. If that means we can keep Lavonte, Suh, Godwin then I’m ok with that. Look for Brate, Brady, to renegotiate their contracts. Brady to give us more cap room and Brate if he wants to… Read more »

Brady is only making $25 million a year which is peanuts for the GOAT. Such notable QB’s as Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles and Matt Ryan make more money than him. Combine their Lombardi trophies together and you come up with zero.

Not so.

Godwin is probably my favorite player on the team every since I saw him on his first day of training camp as a rookie. He was full package from Day 1: Size, speed, hands and toughness. I’d like to see him signed to a long term deal, but I understand that we have a lot of great WR’s so the Franchise Tag makes sense.

SaskBucs

15.8 is a steep tag. I want to keep Godwin. If the Bucs could extend Brady one more Season and sign Godwin to a 2 year 25 million deal or something like that where he is still making good money in the championship window that would be ideal. He would be a 26 year old FA with hopefully another ring attached to his name.

Anyway, I hope all our roster dreams come true and if we lose a couple guys, they will be replaced with hungry ring chasers that wanna play with Tom as many of you have mentioned.

Godwin is just a great reliable receiver in every way you need him to be. him amd David are to me the most important to keep. I like Barrett a lot and love the chemistry him and JPP have as long as they have Vea up the middle but that’s what scares me. If Vea is there I know our line can be scary but when he wasn’t there it was just very telling about how much of Barrett’s success is purely his. If he tries to ask for $20 mil I honestly would rather them try to find someone… Read more »

Except that Godwin disappeared at the end of the regular season and in the playoffs – between playing hurt and dropping way too many balls including TDs. He was very far from a top tier receiver for the Bucs when it mattered the most.

Exactly when did he “disappear”? He was incredibly consistent. The final 7 games, he averaged 5.25 rec for 75 yards, and scored 5 TD’s in those 7 games. And he did that catching 37 of 49 targets(75%). He either scored a TD, or had at least 6 rec/ 92 yards, in 6 of the final 7 regular season games. The only thing that prevented him from going bonkers in the final month of the season, was Brady forcing the ball to Brown, so that he could get his incentive bonus. In his first 31 regular season games as a starter,… Read more »

I hate Franchise tags because it usually means, we got one year, and if he is not a pro-bowler, or even if he is, he is likely gone, afterward. Godwin is so good, and I know we are deep with receivers, but there is no one in the Receiver group that can do what he does. I just hope he stays healthy.

Manipulating the cap seems pretty simple to me. The cap is to be relatively low for 2021 and expected to be much higher in 2022 and beyond. Us “Boomers” remember the cartoon character Whimpy who often proposed the deal to “Gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Thus, you sign the player to a relatively low 2021 salary including a bonus spread over the two or three year deal and pay the bulk of the contract on ………..Tuesday.

Haha good one, But this goes against the philosophy of the FO of “kicking the old can down the road”…The smart play is to not get sentimental and offer the contracts based on positional value. I love Chris Godwin but we won the SB because of those Horses up Front. BA & JL know this so if anyone gets the tag it’s Barrett. Just a Smoke Screen!

Tag him, then trade him. We have options at receiver. We can resign A.B. fairly cheaply. We still have Evans, Scooter, Johnson, and the draft. We can probably get one of the Jets firsts for him, giving us two first rounders. That could fetch us a good DT, like Barmore from Bama, or an edge rusher to replace JPP. Love Godwin, but you can’t pay two receivers #1 receiver money.

The problem with Godwin is that he is not a No. 1 WR. Mike Evans is. Kenny Golladay is but Godwin is not.
Evans takes a lot of heat off Godwin who is left in one on one coverage most of the time which gives Godwin more freedom to catch the ball and even be a target.
Make him your No. 1 WR and watch and see if his numbers don’t dip. This happened here with Alvin Harper and Bert Emmanuel.

I wouldn’t compare Godwin to either one of those guys. “Hurt” Emmanuel might have been alright if he wasn’t “hurt” so often. He does have a rule named after him though.
