7. Los Angeles Chargers
Key Free Agency Additions: OT Russell Okung
Key Free Agency Losses: RB Danny Woodhead
Their Pick: Michigan State DL Malik McDowell
You’ll read many mock drafts with the Chargers taking free safety Malik Hooker here. I like Hooker a lot (phrasing), but it’s just hard to justify taking a safety in the Top 10. The positions that deserve Top 10 selections are mostly quarterbacks and players who can affect the trenches, plus a few exceptions of elite talent at skill positions.
Chargers writer Kyle Posey of Bolts from the Blue brought up McDowell as a possible selection at No. 7 and the logistics of it make sense on the field paired with Bosa. Off the field, McDowell has a lot of question marks. He even said at the podium during Combine interviews that he just stopped listening to coaches at Michigan State and did whatever he wanted. I know there are plenty of examples of great NFL players who weren’t perfect little angels, but it has to be looked into. If a team can get past that, a team is getting a monster defensive lineman.
