But, it could be the "assurance" of an extra year, albeit, not guaranteed.
If he plays well this season and next season, it opens up the door to have the final season (2029) become fully guaranteed (with a possible extension).

I could be wrong but I feel like baker didn't want to go into this season without another deal. However you also have to negotiate. Baker and Vea wanted to get this done at the end of the day because they're not getting younger. An injury means everything at this age.
My guess is that it was timed for just before he was scheduled to speak to the media tomorrow, get some added positive spin before the season starts, and before the Cleveland game in 2 weeks, against the team who didn’t want him anymore, and the QB for which they dumped him.Yep. Just a thought, Licht maybe recapturing some goodwill with the media - but more importantly with self-proclaimed Franchise starting QB - with a little extra sauce for Baker heading into week 2.
Licht needed some wins this off season because he became a passive bystander for the majority of it and Vea and Baker started to pushback a bit and Licht had to iron out deals.
So, he basically got the same exact offer from last month; but with an extra non-guaranteed year.

Mayfield wanted that third year. In some ways he needed it. If he had accepted the Bucs’ offer in August of two years and $100+ million, as Jeremy Fowler had reported, then he would not be able to lay claim to the largest contract in Bucs history. That mantle would stay with Tristan Wirfs and his five-year, $140.625 million deal. But with that extra year he can now boast he has signed the biggest deal the team has ever given out.
The Bucs acquiesced on the extra year, but they held strong on the guarantees. From the team perspective the deal has not changed from the August offer in terms of what the Buccaneers are locked in for. And now they have a 2029 option year on their franchise quarterback for an amount that will likely be the equivalent of $43 million in cash this year.
This looks to be a real win-win for both sides

I think he got an extra $10M guaranteed, but that's about it. It's pretty much the same deal with two extra guaranteed years after 2026, from what I can tell.

Pumped we will be a 9-8 football squad the next three seasons. I guess that beats those seasons of being 5-11, 4-12, and 3-13 clubs.
