it's just odd that a deadline was given of training camp and then out of another side of mouth...ahh take your time, we can figure this out in 2028!!!
oh, I took the comment to mean a) he was asked and b) he said he would play it on it, implying that it will be about $50 million then so why would the Bucs want that? Isn't part of the benefit to the Bucs of the longer deal better cap management then having him play on the tag?
franchise tag is $47M which by all accounts would be lower than what many would consider Bakers market value in a new deal (Love, Purdy, Hurts, Goff, Lawrence, etc.)
i think from a cap hit perspective it's more to the Bucs, but Baker only getting $47M by all accounts would be a disappointment in his camp, one would think given the current market value for the QBs tiered in the top 15 let's call it.
Well I would definitely need help with the contract part, but you say the part in bold above . . .so isnt that his point in the game of chicken?
The Bucs already have a big cap hit in 2026 for him and then it would be huge in 2027 because it would be the the tag (about 50K then) PLUS all the other $ from the void years as a cap hit?
He gets a huge raise and then he is a free agnet? That is a WIN to a guy whose entire career is about betting on himself
Again, I dont think it matters. I think they get a deal done, but he wouldn't be disappointed with $47-$50M in one season and then free agency.
Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence getting $55M a year, Purdy and Goff getting $53M a year, and Hurts getting $51M per year.
Yes, $47M is a bit of a discount.
i think from a cap hit perspective, it wouldn't make sense for the Bucs given the accelerated dead money from voided years. But to be honest, the franchise tag would only be used as a mechanism to prevent other teams from the negotiations, (i.e. Vikings, Steelers) and potentially buy Bucs time in negotiating the deal throughout 2027 and prior to next season.
One would think that if Bucs are performing well during this season, likely due to Baker's play, that a deal would get done in the $50-$55M range and call it a 4 year deal.
BUT.....if Bucs are not performing well, talking double digit losses, likely due to Baker's play in addition to other factors, then yeah, things could get interesting.
Being positive thinking, and my hesitation being cured by good QB play, Bucs likely re-sign Baker at some point following the end of the season for the $4 year, $220M deal.
being realistic thinking, he's closer to the 2023/2025 guy then he is the 2024 guy, things could get hairy and Bucs maybe try to offer a 2-3 year deal instead of the 4 or 5 that Baker decides.
If he's the last 8 game guy, Baker isn't on this team for the 2027 season.
I think the team tried to leverage Sam Darnold deal, and is slowly coming up from their initial “offer”. I agree that the $47 - $50 is likely where the market/tag is and will be - and likelly where Baker will end up.it's just odd that a deadline was given of training camp and then out of another side of mouth...ahh take your time, we can figure this out in 2028!!!

Deal structure and cap hit are real.

Yes, $47M is a bit of a discount.
May we all be blessed with such a "discount"
My point was that its a raise for him and free agency to follow. You're talking about versus the market

Discount is relevant to the year.
Mahomes got that massive contract 4 years ago and now it's a killer deal.
Gotta adjust for inflation

We’ll see, that was always a possibility.Interesting tweets today regarding baker contract extension

…but it’s not like the organization ignored it. From what I heard they were still working it.

what they did was potentially worse….a low ball offer that didn’t even receive a counter
the Bucs obviously wanted to start the discussions to show they “are committed” in quotes to Baker
quite frankly, a baker with a chip on his shoulder out to prove himself is a dream come true if you are a Buc fan. For those of us betting on a baker rebound, this is best case scenario

Which, as we both know, was his original argument.
But, flip-floppers gonna flip-flop.

WOW, look at Mr. "Last 8 Games of 2025 Baker" betting that 2026 Baker will be more like "First 9 Games of 2025 Baker!"
For the entire 17 games?
Maybe, but if he “rebounds” with a defense that can stop 3rd & 28, or keep opposing defenses out of the end zone one less time than we can score…We’ll see, that was always a possibility.Interesting tweets today regarding baker contract extension

…then we’ll be ponying up for a time more cash, and we’ll get to see Licht decide how many Buccaneer children he loves the least…
There’s a difference between making Baker play on another prove it contact, and pissing him off on his way out of the door.
No extensions for Baker, Vita, Yaya, or Mauch? Kinda weird
Oh yeah! Why do I keep forgetting, he was a Baker-boi, before those last 9 games. We’ll see, that was always a possibility.

Hard to keep track.

don’t get it twisted Olaf.
after all I started the baker mayfield appreciation thread back in 2023
i want nothing more than for baker to dominate and for donkey honkey to serve me “crow”
i have faith in Baker but im also a businessman so i take the emotion out of it (except for Evans, I couldn’t help myself with him, I was more stoked when he got 1,000 yards in 2024 then I cared about Bucs playoff birth)
It made little sense to give baker a contract extension given his play last year
I stand by that if he repeated 2024, we wouldn’t even have this thread because he already be extended
The Bucs, for once, are playing in smart and there’s no ill will by baker who is level headed about the whole thing.
PS- I’m a smooth brain from Philadelphia so I don’t give out charity fandom. Give Baker $200M after the most mid ass Bowles type play? Yeah right cuz.

You mention 3rd and 28.
what about 20, 20, 20, 17, and 16? Those were the total points scored by the offense in the other 5 games they were favored in.
somehow they won 2 of those games. Defense maybe?
baker played Hellen Keller like in a Quinn ewers led dolphins team who quit on their coach. 17 points with most of that in garbage time. You kidding me? In a must win game?
yeah I was a baker bro but he has to earn it back. He played himself out of a contract extension but go ahead and gloat that “im wrong or moving goal post”. Delusional at best man
So, we’re still blaming Baker for Bowles coaching decisions?
Businessmen know that the longer you wait to make a deal can cost you more (resources) in the long run. What you’re describing is a high-stakes gamble on the talent you’ve assembled, without securing the most important position.
But, short-term thinking is a choice.
