In 2023 the ranking is 7 for Purdy and 11 for Mayfield.
I think there are many reasons for Evans to go to the 49ers but he played with Mayfield in 2023 and 2024 and 2025, so I doubt he saw Mayfield's 2025 season as who Mayfield is. Even more likely he did NOT when Grizz was fired. In fact, instability at OC, 2026 team prospects, head coach instability, and even the draft of Egbuka and the depth of the WR room all probably top the Mayfield versus Purdy comaprison (and I think Purdy is a good QB)
Evans made the right decision for HIM. several people who cover the team and the NFL have said 1000 catches is the goal. Thats about 70 receptions for 2 seasons. He needs to be a 1 or 1a type receiver to get those numbers and stay healthy. He's actually out injured now with a leg muscle strain.
Instability at OC, uncertainty if Mayfield will be a Buc in 2027 and beyond, uncertainty about Bowles future and a crowded WR room pointed to Evans to look for more stable organization and that is the 49ers.
If you look at injuries as it relates to the Niners, and the general age of their starting offense, it’s not a super attractive place to be. They need to figure out their injury situation in San Fran before they can be considered stable.
The good news is, rookie Stribling, out of Ole Miss is going to be available super late in FFL and will be a solid contributor.
Players don't look at injuries as instability that is more of a coaching/FO point of view. Evans playing a few games with CMAC and Kittle is enough to move the needle for him to move across the country along with his family.
Bucs organization at HC, OC are unstable and that is true. Bowles was handed the HC job and the Bucs OC position has been a revolve door the last half decade. That makes it tough for a super star on offense to want to stick around.
Mayfield may feel the same way too after 2026 which is why I am not on the Robinson bandwagon.
All I know is that if Mayfield can perform with the deck stacked against him this upcoming season then he would have earned his mega contract for 2027 from the Bucs or another team.
While Shanny isn’t at any risk to get fired. Injuries are the antithesis of stability. If the stars on your team are injured in August, you are generally not stable the entire season. Who is going to play receiver for the Niners??? We all know here in Tampa that this injury with Evans is going to be an all season injury. The Niners are old and injured. In fact Shanahan himself is the only reason they will compete this season. He’s the best in the business.

NO ONE says Mayfield is 2024 ("one season under Coen") and THAT is why he should get paid in the $50 million range. I doubt anyone thinks any QB = their BEST season. Most just dont say a QB = his worst portion of A season. More important though. . . the QB MARKET is the QB MARKET.
2025 Mayfield is 10th in yards and maybe 8th or 9th in TDs so pick it, but maybe the 11th ranked QB in his worst year? 12th ranked? The 12th QB salary is about $51 million per. Take him down to 15th its $44 up to Love and Lawrence its $55 but those are 2024 contracts, so again the market is low to mid $50s.
In 2023, Mayfield was 9th in yards (4044), 7th in TDs (28) and threw 65% completions, so his 2023 performance only elevates his average relative to 2025, right? Mayfield needs to PROVE he better than his one season under Coen and one season under Canales? :-)
So, yes make him prove whatever you want but the MARKET (not Mayfield) is +/- a couple million of what the Bucs already reportedly offered him, in the $50million range. Either way, I dont think anyone is saying pay him based on 2024 or even that he is 2024 . . . BECAUSE he has a three year track record with the Bucs. His AVERAGE as a Buc is 4079 yards, 31 TDs 12 INTs and a 97% rating. That track record was achieved across THREE very different offenses and three very different coordinators, so talk about seeing him under a variety of circumstances. Those numbers - 4079 yards, 31 TDs 12 INTs and a 97% rating - is just below Hebert's career average in yards, better than his career average in TDs per season, a couple INTs worse, and about the same rating. Hebert is a $52 million APY and that is for a contract signed in 2023, I think?
Brock Purdy (who Evans supposedly left to play for) has been injured a bunch, but if you average his two near complete seasons Mayfield is around that level and NO ONE would compare the offenses of Canales or Grizz to Shanahan. Brock Purdy= is $53 million per.
Even including his "one year with Coen" Trevor Lawrence is a 3700 yard, 63% completion, 23-25 TDs (take out injured years) and an 86% rating. His rating IN COEN's offense, is below Mayfield's average over his time as a Buc. Lawrences is $55 million.
Anyway, tons of sample size for Mayfield's performance as a Buc and for the marketplace. No one says he is 2024 so pay him $50+

This is a bit out there (admittedly) but I think the Bucs are up on their lease in 2027 (I thought? Could be wrong) and looking for a BILLION in reno to RJS. You'd think they want some positive vibes soon to try to get as much of that reno $ as they can and as good a terms as they can. Maybe they are sitting on a big name coach? Big Tuna, three times the charm? Belicheck?
(kidding about those coaches, but the Glazers MO is to try to line things like this up)
