In another thread I said this defensive performance was less about the Bucs and more about Kyler simply missing left and right.

Please take a second and watch the video and realize how open these players are consistently and how bad Murray sees the field and feels the pocket.

I'm not trying to take all credit away here but against better QBs this would have been gashed.

The individual parts are greater than the sum

Bucs defense is not at full strength either and they were just as sloppy as the offense the last few games. I wouldn't be surprised if they improve from the last three weeks.

1) well the packers offense hasn't exactly been good this year, 22, 20, and 14 points.  Something only the Bucs offense would be envious of. (Packers O just 1 pt better than Tampa!)

defense should be able to hold in check but i dont see the Bucs O reaching the rather elusive 23 points in order to win this game.

2) Bucs are going to get smoked by the Dallas O in prime time.  Dallas putting up at least 35 and that game may be over before the first quarter ends; think Rams prime time last year

3) Steelers tend to play down to their opponent so can see Bucs D holding them under 28 points but still i dont see the offense putting up 23 in any of these games and we will be 0-6 soon enough

our first real chance at a win is against Carolina on 10/25.

I had this team under .500 before the bye and that is probably where they will be. How many wins is the big question mark right now.

To me this defense has three key problems that I am seeing right now and what carried over from last few seasons beyond the poor tackling and LBs and DBs missing their marks.

1. They are selling out to stop the run but that means they are not going upfield and the opposing OL are not tiring out as the game goes on.  This explains why the Bucs can't generate pressure in the 4th quarter of games.  The opposing OLs are not tired and when the smart teams run the ball the Ols just batter the Bucs front seven which further reduces their exta gear in pass rushing situations.

This is where Kancey has to come through because his job as a three tech is to knife through and wear out the LG.  Eventually Kancey can run a stunt with one of the OLBs later in the game and catch the LG flat footed.  What the Bucs may lack with pure speed with pass rushing they can make up for with power and stunts.  Ironically the personnel perfectly suited to run stunts constantly like Schiano used to do.

Bucs front seven has to attack early and often for the pass rush to flourish in the 4th quarter of games.

2. Winfield Jr isn't trusting his marks but more importantly he stopped going after the football.  Feels like he is just going in the motions and T. Smith has passed him the last 17 games.  Feels like Scott is going to pass on him by too.  We need MVP Winfield Jr to become a ballhawk which is why I am surprised Bowles hasn't said anything toward Winfield Jr publicly yet.

3.  I know people posted that photo with the Bucs interior DL lining up wide and the Bengals audibled up the gut but the Bucs DL should not be lining up like this.  Vea and Kancey need to on top of their gaps.  Vea hitting his gaps takes on 2 OL instantly.  Kancey hits his gap and he occupies the LG.  By having the Bucs DL line up wide what is happening is the center can combo block Kancey with the LG and if the RG can handle Vea 1 on 1 that is a win for the offense.  You could argue it still means the Bucs OLBs have to win their 1 v 1 on the outside but if you have no pressure from the NT or 3 tech the outside pressure is useless.

Winfield is a shell of himself since being paid. Maybe that's partly scheme but I have zero trust in his ability to make plays.

Watching the tape, Murray missed a ton of open opportunities. Part of that was pressure but he was getting happy feet even without pressure

Murray and Mayfield have a lot in common.

Winfield used to be moved all over the field. Now it seems like he just plays as the deep safety. When's the last time they sent him on a blitz or played him around the LOS where he used to thrive?
