But if the goal is another Lombardi Trophy, history suggests that betting on offensive innovation is a much safer wager
Great post.
I was going to say it also seems like the way to have consistency competitive teams, where in the past it might have been defenses
Yea and everyone knew it was the right thing to do. Everyone but the glazers, Licht, and arians. I think people were waiting for someone better to come along anyway since the game vs the rams in the playoffs. He's just not a good hc. Bucs leadership chose their friend. He's not the absolute worst hc in the league but the bucs with who've they have had on their team needed someone better to lead them and there is no question they could have been better. Potential was certainly there and why people have been so frustrated.
Brian Flores filed racial discrimination lawsuit in 2022
Todd Bowles is head coach of team post Brady that won back to back divisions at the time, winning a playoff game in the first year, and increasing win total year over year.
Expectations for the Bucs were low
This was happening all around the time of 2024/early 2025 where current climate was still Democrat policy. (view Gruden getting kicked out of ROH back in 2021 and reinstated in 2025)
If you don't think the Glazers were worried about blow back, you guys aren't living in the real world.
I know they were worried about the blow back but that doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. I think a lot of people found out and will continue to find out if you put politics before the quality of the product then you will lose eventually. One reason why this nation is in the shape it's in is because we've done this for too long now. It's gone to the extreme for power purposes. Maybe a good strategy for a politician but not for a business.

Both teams in the super bowl last year had DCs as head coaches.
Vea wants a giant raise and he has no contract for next year. The Bucs, per NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport yesterday, have shown no legit interest in extending Vea’s contract.
“It certainly seems like he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers really have not gotten off the ground with any talks of a possible extension. My understanding is they really didn’t go down the road at all to a possible extension,” Rapoport said.
As Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman has said many times, Vea will not succeed in pushing around Team Glazer and Jason Licht into a market-value contract this summer.
So how much is Vea willing to dig in? And is Licht willing to keep an unhappy player who is getting rustier by the day? Rapoport said “this one’s not quite over yet.”

oh i dont think anyone is arguing right versus wrong
Coen and the offense is what led the team in 2024 to that "impressive" 10-7 record. They had a top 5 offense. The defense under Bowles, even at end of 2024, regressed. It was a no brainer to make Coen head coach and "promote Bowles" to senior advisor to Licht or some bull shit. The Bucs knew that as well....hence trying to make Coen "coach in waiting" for a year and highest paid coordinator in the league.
but i digress, there is the real world with other factors at play, and then their is those on this message board....

ironically, posted on a message board!

but one would agree that last year was an odd year...No Mahomes or Lamar in the playoffs.
if it becomes a trend, then something to consider
2025 - Seattle/NE - MacDonald, Vrabel - both defensive minded
2024 KC/PHI - Reid, Sirianni - both offensive minded
2023 - KC/SF - Reid, Shanahan - both offensive minded
2022 - KC/PHI - Reid, Sirianni - both offensive minded
2021 - LA/CIN - McVay, Taylor - both offensive minded
2020 - TB/KC - Arians, Reid - both offensive minded
2019 - KC/SF - Reid, Shannahan - both offensive minded
then if you factor in the NE dominance which was Belichick, (best coach of all time but not first ballot HOF) who was defensive minded. His oppononents
2018 - McVay - offense
2017 - Doug Pederson - offense
2016 - Dan Quinn - defense
but really, looking at this analysis, the SBs were dominated by NE, KC, PHI, SF, and LAR. So 4 out of 5 had offensive minds. And really i'd argue NE and KC had mount Rushmore of all time great QBs
Last year was the anomaly. The biggest thing is great offensive coordinators turn into head coaches, so you dont want to lose that particularly if you have a top offense. It's just easier to have an offensive minded head coach from that point alone.
SCHEFTER
“To me, reading between the lines, having conversations with people, it feels like there has been a shift. It feels like we’ve gone from a tone of pessimism to one where there is potential optimism,” Schefter said.
“It feels like we’ve gone from Vita Vea wanting a trade to Vita Vea now wanting to get a deal done.
“It feels like we’ve gone from there being questions about Vita Vea not being in Tampa to now let’s see if they can get [a deal] done.
“I think it’s flipped. I think eventually the two sides figure it out. I think they get something done. And I think Vita Vea stays in Tampa.”
1 year 30 mil nice
locked up for the next 2 seasons
Curious to see the way this is structured, considering it’s fully guaranteed and our current cap outlook for 2027.

Chances are very good the SB will flip back to OM vs OM.
Rule change are an outside factor that may keep offensive coaches as head coaches for a while, but football is also a closed universe where things are just shifting. Nothing is permanent. Past is prologue.
A few years back people on these boards questioned why NFL teams even had run games. Now some of the best offenses are built around run games. NFL teams are perpetually going "back to the future" because both defenses and offense are adapting to overcome the current flavor. It used to be that every great offense had a BIG X receiver, now offenses are multiple receiver.
maybe we are not going back because of the rules, but going back would be more the norm.
Just curious, what do you think the odds are that the Bucs tell Vea "no trade, play out your current deal" in 2026?
i'd suggest very high if they want to compete this year
probably 60% he plays on current deal, maybe sits out first several games
probably 20% he is traded
Probably 20% he is extended additional 2 years at a raise.
so ended up closer to your 3rd option, "20% he is extended" but only an addtional 1 year.
compromise
