One career pro bowl.

one career first team all pro.

two career second team all pro.

playing in Tampa certainly didn’t help.

seemed like he was a largely unknown among casuals until Tom Brady got here.

It’s close. I don’t think he gets in sadly.

will be up there with Simeon rice as far as robberies.

i would think so. Might not be first ballot but would think he gets in eventually and doesnt necessary have to wait that long.

the Superbowl championship definitely helps as well as being on one team the whole time

Doubtful. David was very good, but not a game changer. Not in the same league as Derrick Brooks.

His numbers are up there with Derrick brooks.

David has more sacks picks and fumble recoveries.

David had way more impact on the game and his team than a guy like Luke Kuechly, and Luke just went in on a first ballot.

Yeah comparable numbers in tackles per game, with David having the edge in sacks and force fumbles and Luke with INTs.

David also did it much longer

Luke was getting all pros every year though...can't put my finger on why he may have been overrated....

This.  We wanted so badly for him to be great, and he did answer that definition, but he's not a first ballot hall of famer in my eyes because he simply didn't play long enough.  David played 5 more seasons than Luke and won a super bowl. The Panthers were never close, even when they actually played in the game.

Say you never watched Kuechly play without saying you never watched Kuechly play.

LVD will get in.

Another deserved beneficiary of the Brady effect.

Kuechly wasn't overrated. The dude did everything well on the football field at the MLB position. He's the prototype of the modern day MLB, excellent in coverage, against the run, a great field general, and team leader.

Lavonte's INT in the closing minutes of the seahawk game last year goes so overlooked in that game because of the offensive explosion on both sides of the ball.

That play is a microcosm of his career.  Largely overlooked.

He's in.

He was never better than David.  Better than Mark Barron???  Of course.  David made more game changing plays.  Period.

I would say he was a better cover guy, especially deep cover. And probably a better field general, but that ain't by much. They were both excellent against the run. Lavonte has the edge behind the LOS, and that may be about it.

Stat Lavonte David Luke Kuechly
Games 201 125
Tackles 1,716 1,092
Tackles/game 8.54 8.74
Sacks 37.5 12.5
Sacks/game 0.19 0.10
INTs 12 18
INTs/game 0.060 0.144
Passes defended 73 66
PD/game 0.36 0.53
Tackles for loss 177 75
TFL/game 0.88 0.60

Lavonte is definitely underrated, but that doesn't mean Kuechly was overrated. There was a four or five year period where Luke Kuechly was the best backer in football, and Lavonte David was playing during that timeframe.  Here is what Chat says:

Who was the better linebacker, Lavonte David or Luke Kuechly?

If we're comparing Lavonte David vs. Luke Kuechly at their peaks, I'd give the edge to Luke Kuechly, although it's a much closer comparison than the career accolades suggest.

My verdict: Kuechly, but David was incredibly underrated

  Lavonte David Luke Kuechly
Pro Bowls 1 7
First-Team All-Pro 1 5
Defensive Player of Year 0 1
Tackles 1,700+ 1,092
INTs 34 18
Career 2012–present 2012–2019
Super Bowl 1 0

Why I'd take Kuechly

Kuechly was the better peak player. From roughly 2012–2016, he was arguably the best all-around linebacker in football.

He was exceptional at:

  • Diagnosing plays before they developed
  • Run defense
  • Coverage
  • Blitzing
  • Getting into passing lanes
  • Communicating defensive assignments

His 2013 season was particularly ridiculous: 156 tackles, 7 interceptions, 2 sacks and 10 passes defended, earning him Defensive Player of the Year.

And unlike many traditional MLBs, Kuechly could legitimately stay on the field in passing situations without being a liability.

But David has a stronger longevity argument

This is where the comparison gets really interesting.

David has been an elite linebacker for an extraordinarily long time. He has played 14+ seasons and accumulated over 1,700 tackles, while remaining an excellent coverage linebacker.

And there's an argument that David was one of the most underrated defensive players in the NFL for much of the 2010s.

He also had something Kuechly didn't: longevity. Kuechly retired after the 2019 season at only 28.

If I were building a defense

Peak/one season:
🥇 Kuechly

Career longevity:
🥇 David

Coverage:
Very close, but Kuechly

Run defense:
Kuechly

Blitzing/pass rush:
David

Football IQ/diagnosing:
Kuechly

Overall:
Kuechly — about 60/40.

got it.  like where i was going was that David likely wont be first ballot and i'd argue he was close to Kuechly during the time they were playing; then you factor in David's longevity and leader of a super bowl winning defense and i'd say David had the better career; yet one guy had all the pro bowls and first ballot and the other might have to go call games for Fox to get in!

so ill give it to you that David is under-rated but when i look at a class of Brees, Fitzgerald, Vinatieri.  I'd argue Kuechly is that 4th wheel on the shopping cart that just aint quite right

I'd argue Terrell Suggs likely should have gotten in over him. Appreciate different positions but still.
