That spin move he put on Publix's finest was a thing of beauty.David Walker will take starter reps away from YaYa because I think Walker is much bette
Bowles talks about Walker like he's a good pass rusher who cant be relied upon to do more than pass rush, so that might limit how much he takes away from Diaby. Basee don last night Walker is clearly a good pass rusher. And anyone opposite of Bain is likely to pick up sacks
Agreed. And Bains hump move early.
Easy to get very optimistic about the D-line. Have to hold back though until we see them against "NFL's Finest" instead of Publix, Food Lion etc.
Overpaying for average players is how you stay in purgatory.
Good teams maximize the comp pick formula.
This would be a fascinating topic on its own if you take out "average" to set up your argument to win
I think two Bucs players you put in that category are Otton and Diaby, so in your argument you would let Otton and Diaby go rather than pay them $10 million and say $27 million, respectively? And you would do that for their comp picks?
I dont really follow the calculation of the picks, so I may be wrong here, but wouldn't that mean that at best we would get somewhere between a 3rd and a 7th for each, assuming we didnt sign a bunch of FAs ourselves?
I see where that would be potentially advantageous from a cap standpoint. Trading a big second contract for a drafted player, but wouldn't you have to bring some FA in also? I doubt there is a 3rd through 7th pick who would be statistically expected to outperform an experienced Otton and/or Diaby? Or, at least its pretty rare. Aren't Otton and Diaby are both guys meeting or exceeding their most likely draft outcome given when they were picked? Long terms starter rates:
"1st Round: ~45% to 50% chance
- 2nd Round: ~33% chance
- 3rd Round: ~16% chance
- 4th Round: ~8% chance
- 5th through 7th Rounds: 1% to 4% chance"
Maybe you mean accumulate the comp picks to move up or something? Thats would be a pretty slow play though.
Anyway, its interesting as a concept.

No, I’d let Diaby go because he’s not worth $27M per.

It's not just 1 for 1. Having an extra third because a team chooses to overpay Diaby gives us the ability to also trade up. Which could be the difference between a perennial all-pro in Humphrey and a QB that's not in the league after 2.5 years.
It comes down to what Diaby demands. Otton might only be slightly overpaid but if someone gave him the same (are presumably a slightly higher) contract then that would probably give us a 4th or 5th round pick.
The problem of course in this strategy is Bowles hasn't created a system where players look better than they really are... Like what Belichik did in NE where players leave and they fall off a cliff.
So the strategy might be worthless with Bowles.
For example Bowles could have maximized and developed Devin White then someone gives him a huge contract and it's a win/win.
It's all odds at this point and it really depends on what Diaby does this year. There's the stats and there's the performance. Hopefully he shows us a big leap and we will want to keep him... But if it's more of the same I'd be fine letting someone massively overpay and grab a comp pick.
It all just depends
if Diaby hits double digit sacks some team will view him as a 1 and pay him accordingly. The Seahawks paid Hall who is a clear 3 like he was a 2 as the example i cited.
With that said with Walker and Baine the Bucs could let Diaby walk but the reality is what will the Bucs spend that cap space on beyond Mayfield?
Re siging Mauch who is a RG doesn't make sense as that is the least valuable position on the OL as Hall Famer Randy Cross once said. McLaughlin is a kicker and isn't going to command a warchest.
So it comes down to Mayfield and Diaby. If Mayfield underperforms then the team will shift to run oriented offense and re sign Diaby for that ball control focus that Bowles wants. If Mayfield balls out then it means Diaby may be gone. There is a chance there is a surprise cut or trade which would allow the Bucs to keep Mayfield and Diaby too.

Excellent.
Hopefully, it’s not us.

Without his extension the Bucs were facing a real possibility of using the franchise tag on Baker Mayfield in 2027. But now the franchise tag landscape has entirely changed for the team. Teams can only use one franchise tag per year. And now that Tampa Bay doesn’t have to worry about using the tag on Mayfield, the team could potentially use it on another player.
The most likely candidate for the tag is outside linebacker Yaya Diaby.
[Diaby's] current market at somewhere between $25 and $27 million per year. Without any improvement in play Diaby could be looking at a pay day of $30 million per year next offseason comparable to what Carolina gave Jaelan Phillips. And what if he finally clears double-digit sacks? In that scenario he absolutely clears $30 million per year.
After signing Mayfield and Vita Vea, the Bucs may not have the cash to keep Diaby. And instead of just letting him walk in the offseason they could try to tag and trade Diaby
Jonathan Greenard . . .was traded this offseason from the Vikings to the Eagles for two third-rounders (with a seventh-rounder going back to the Vikings).
Greenard had two years left on his deal when he was traded. Diaby would have only one under the tag. I estimate he would go to a contender for a second-round pick. In a world where the normally cash-conservative Bucs have now given out big money to both Vea and Mayfield, I could see a tag-and-trade for Diaby to net a top 75 pick (a cash-controlled asset) for a player the team likely couldn’t afford to keep long-term is a real possibility for Tampa Bay next year.
$30M? Ha! Buh bye. We’ll see what he does this season, but he gets another 5-7 sacks, good luck to the team that is willing to pay him that.
I think he is saying tag and trade
Tag and trade is the right thing to do with Diaby at that price tag.
But what if we end up stuck with him on the tag?

quoted for alldaway
A top 75 pick yields you the Braswell of the worlds who is the 2nd large cap hit after Evans this year so far.

or a Mauch for 4 affordable years. Or a trade up
But maybe the Glazers will just pay him out of their pocket ... like Lurie. 😉
