READ-OPTION: MACK OR KAMARA?

This part of the Cover 3 is particularly fitting this week since both of these running backs come from read-option offenses.

After presenting all the words and gifs to you on the previous page, it’s now your turn to make the call.

You’re Bucs general manager Jason Licht. It’s Day 2 of the NFL Draft and your team needs a running back. In this instance let’s say running back Jacquizz Rodgers has re-signed and Doug Martin has been released. Charles Sims is still on the roster, but it’s clear the team doesn’t trust him as much as they used to.

You’re on the clock. Who will it be?

In the case for Mack, you’re looking at one of the best “big-play” running backs in the entire draft. This is a player who could change the game with a single carry. However, you’re also looking at a guy who needs some work. In order for him to even get on the field in a consistent role, you know that coaches will have to sure up his pass catching and pass protecting as well as his fumbling problems. Mack doesn’t do the “little things” too well right now, but he does the “big things,” in the backfield and as a potential kick returner, better than any Buccaneer has in a long time – if ever.

On the flip side, Kamara, a gifted pass catcher, is of the Devonta Freeman mold. He might not be as fast or as strong, but when it comes to the kind of mentality he has and where he likes to win as a runner, Freeman’s style makes sense. Remember, before he recorded over 1,500 yards from scrimmage his rookie year, Freeman was thought of as a guy much like Kamara was who won with balance and determination, but didn’t have the next level athletic ability to succeed. Kamara is a natural athlete with the ball in his hands and without it, he just doesn’t seem to have that rare fourth or fifth gear in terms of top speed.

The choice is yours.
