With the Jameis Winston three-game suspension to start the regular season, plenty of questions remain. One of the biggest is will Winston step right back in the starting lineup as Tampa Bay’s quarterback in Week 4 at Chicago upon his return?

Bucs GM Jason Licht said that Winston isn’t going to automatically assume the starting role when he returns. Licht made that comment on the Bucs preseason TV broadcast during the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s game on WFLA News Channel 8.

Winston’s suspension starts this weekend and he isn’t eligible to rejoin his teammates until after Week 3, which happens to be following the Monday night matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, meaning it would be Tuesday preceding the Bears game. Certainly a lot will also depend on how the team is performing, and specifically Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is slated to start the first three games for Tampa Bay.

Then Jason Licht is going to lose his damn job. Because I’m promising you with our schedule we have, we’ll be LUCKY to be 1-2. When that happens his job will be on the line. Purely a motivational move and I agree with it. Let’s hope it keeps Winston focused

So if the Bucs go 3-0 I can see the argument but how likely is that?

What else could Licht say at this point in time publicly? Of course he’s going to be starting game 4; most of us realize that we will be very fortunate if we are 1-2 when Jameis starts Game 4. The defense is still my biggest concern because I have little faith that Smith scheme is going to work.

Nothing that I have seen from the preseason has made me feel much better about our defense except for some of the new DB play. The revamped D Line has not shown much IMO. I know it’s preseason but I was expecting a little more than what we have seen so far.

We may need to score 28-30 points a game to win and that puts us right where we have been with Jameis pressing and mistakes more prevalent. I am nervous….

Buc n Philly, I know our defense hasn’t looked the greatest this preseason including our D-line but to be fair we haven’t had our whole starting defense on the field together at all this pre season so its hard to judge what we have. I for one am anxious to see what our defense can do when all the starters actually play together.

Horse, do you know the Bucs coaching staff personally? How do you know what scheme Smith will be running on defense? If you do please enlighten us. One thing I have learned is that during the preseason, all offense and defense plays and schemes are very vanilla. Coaches don’t show their plays and schemes so they will be harder to game plan for. To just assume Smith will run the same scheme is asinine. How much of an advantage would it be if we entered week 1 with a different scheme on defense? It would def increase our chances of… Read more »

I have more concern the D line can be good than Smith’s scheme. Secondary looks better. D line haven’t looked great all pre season really. Spence is a joke. Scratch him off the list of “improved players” on D line. Can’t even beat scrubs. Unless Fitz played perfect football and we were 3-0 Winston will play game 4. If we play good defense, and run the ball well, and don’t make lot mistakes we might be 1-2 or maybe even 2-1 (not good chance lol.) it won’t be because Fitz played like Tom Brady. He just has to be mistake… Read more »

Yes the defensive is better than last year’s, but how much to make a real difference?

Last year the Saints started 0-3, loosing to the Giants, the Raiders and Falcons. The Eagles will be missing key players like their starting qb while Foles just had a Joe Flacco type season ( average stats in regular season, GOAT in the playoff ). I am more concern about the Steelers game because those guys are tough. But sincerly I would be more surprise to see us at 0-3 than at 2-1. We have to be optimistic otherwise it’s useless to watch them play !

What else is she supposed to say? There is literally NOTHING positive to the team about naming a week 4 starter at this point. Our opponents don’t need to know who is starting week 4, so we don’t need to know either.

It hurts that week 4 will already be a short week. Its asking a lot of Winston to come in and start a game with 2 days of practice after not being in the building for almost a month. Depending on how Fitz plays it might be smarter to wait until week 5 to start Jameis.

Why would Winston only have 2 days to practice. There is 6 days between games. Don’t you think Winston will be hungry and Practicing Tuesday since he isn’t playing Monday. Winston will get at least 4 days of practice even if its just throwing routes to our practice squad players. Also, if Winston doesn’t start week 4, then it will be week 6 before he gets to start.

I agree with those posts above saying Licht is just saying what should be said; of course Winston will take over. But I think there’s a more important QB question to ask: Why isn’t Ryan Griffin starting instead of Fitzpatrick? Was he not the better between the two? Heck, maybe the best of all three QBs in those games?
