FAB 5. SR’s Buc Shots

• I profiled Duke junior quarterback Daniel Jones in last week’s SR’s Fab 5 and said he was one of the sleepers at the quarterback position in the 2019 NFL Draft. Turns out that was right on cue as Jones had one of the best games of his career in a 42-35 win over rival North Carolina on Saturday when he completed 31-of-54 passes (57.4 percent) for 361 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that he rushed for a career-high 186 yards on 15 carries, including an impressive, career-long 68-yard touchdown dash. I suggested Jones’ game was similar to that of former Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon, but Jones is faster and an even better athlete than the mobile Gannon was.

DRAFT DIAMOND: ALABAMA S DEIONTE THOMPSON
PewterReport.com is the undisputed leader in Bucs draft coverage each year. During the 2018 draft, we accurately forecasted the selection of three Tampa Bay draft picks as defensive tackle Vita Vea, offensive lineman Alex Cappa and wide receiver Justin Watson were all Bucs’ Best Bets.

Draft season for the PewterReport.com staff starts in September as we do a great deal of scouting during college football season. Trevor Sikkema, who also provides content for TheDraftNetwork.com, will provide SR’s Fab 5 with a weekly segment called Draft Diamond where we focus on a different draft prospect each week. This week’s Draft Diamond is Alabama S Deionte Thompson.

The Buccaneers will likely be looking for defensive back help this offseason, and if they can’t get it in the form of a cornerback, than perhaps one of the most instinctive, athletic, rangy safeties with a knack for making impacts on the ball – key trait there – would do the trick. Although he had playing experience last year, Thompson is in just his first full year as a starter, and he’s already proven to be one of the premiere players in all of college football. He taught teams early on that it’s just best not to throw his way. He has two interceptions this season along with five passes defensed, and had his first career pick last year as a sophomore.

With speed and good awareness, Thompson plays the single high free safety role for Alabama in their aggressive style of defense. He also is not afraid to come up and lay a hit at full speed. He’s not the biggest guy out there at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, but pairing him with a guy like Justin Evans could make for one hell of an athletic duo, and hopefully a pairing that can be more aggressive to the ball and not so worried about getting beaten deep.

• If the Glazers are considering a regime change in Tampa Bay there is certainly one member of the front office that deserves to stick around and that’s director of football administration Mike Greenberg. One of general manager Jason Licht’s best moves in Tampa Bay was to keep Greenberg, a holdover from the Mark Dominik regime, on board as a part of his staff. Greenberg and Licht have worked extremely well together on contract negotiations and salary cap management.

The latest evidence is Ali Marpet’s contract extension. A quick look at OverTheCap.com shows that Marpet is the seventh-highest paid guard in the league and was signed for the bargain price of $10.825 million APY (average salary per year). Marpet was making $874,581 in the final year of his rookie contract and was given a $2 million signing bonus on October 11 when he signed his five-year contract extension.

Every other notable interior lineman who recently received a contract extension got at least $8 million more in the year they signed their deal. Jacksonville’s Brandon Linder saw his 2017 cap charge increase to $9.14 million. Marpet’s APY is $10.825 million and Linder’s is $10.34 million, but the Bucs will pay Marpet less over the first three years when the money is guaranteed and that’s all that really matters.

Even Jacksonville’s Andrew Norwell, who is the highest-paid guard in the league at $13 million APY, has $30 million in guaranteed money, including a $15 million signing bonus. The cash payout for Norwell’s first three years is $30 million compared to around $26 million for Marpet, but the Bucs did it with $13 million less in signing bonus money.

Greenberg has helped the Bucs stay out of salary cap hell since he joined the team in 2010, and he’ll continue to do that as long as he’s employed by Tampa Bay.

• I typically don’t file an SR’s Fab 5 column on Black Friday, which is the national shopping holiday the day after Thanksgiving, and that will continue this year. So enjoy your turkey, your holiday shopping and a Friday filled with college football, and read my next SR’s Fab 5, which will be published on Friday, November 30.

We’ll have a special PewterReport.com Holiday Shopping Guide article next week telling you about some of our advertising partners’ holiday deals are. There’s no better way to support PewterReport.com than by supporting the businesses that advertise with us. One of those businesses is FitnessTek.

I became a FitnessTek client months ago before owner Kevin Votta became an advertising partner and can personally recommend FitnessTek for injury recovery and helping you achieve your fitness goal. Now, PewterReport.com’s Mark Cook has become a client to help his ailing back and has been amazed at the results he’s gotten working with Votta at FitnessTek. Now, FitnessTek has a special offer for PewterReport.com readers – save $100 off your initial visit.

Fitness Tek Square October 2018What sets FitnessTek apart from other gyms and personal trainers is that Votta is M.A.T. certified in Muscle Activation Techniques. I had no idea what that was before my initial visit from back, neck and shoulder pain on my right side. Votta did a thorough diagnosis and found that small muscles in my back and on me left side were no longer activating from poor posture and sitting all day at a computer or behind the wheel of my SUV.

That weakness was causing the right side of my body to overcompensate and knot up. Votta used M.A.T. to activate those small muscle groups to bring my body back in balance and relieve the pain and discomfort I had.

If you are middle-aged like me and sit at a desk all day you can probably relate, and would be an ideal candidate for FitnessTek’s services. Or if you have suffered an injury and need to recover strength and range of motion you could benefit from being a client at FitnessTek.

Conveniently located in Tampa, FitnessTek can help you strengthen your body, relieve pain and stiffness, increase range of motion and help you recover from injuries. To learn more about Votta and Fitness visit Fitness-Tek.com or call (813) 406-0827 and tell them PewterReport.com sent you. Be sure to mention PewterReport.com to save $100 off your initial visit.
