Appearing on his first interview as the Bucs new head coach, Bruce Arians went on The Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday to discuss his new job.

Among a wide range of topics, the key points from Arian’s discussion was that Byron Leftwich will be calling plays as the offensive coordinator, while Todd Bowles will be the defensive coordinator, despite rumors that he may take the same position for the Chicago Bears.

He also said that his relationship with GM Jason Licht was the reason he considered the opportunity, and that he has full confidence in QB Jameis Winston.

“Everything, is going to be built around him,” Arians said of Winston. “I think he can win it all.”

  1. I get it that hope frequently triumphs over facts, but I still don’t get the orgasmic reaction to Arians’ hiring.

He announced today that Byron Leftwich will be his offensive coordinator and play caller. For those who don’t realize, Leftwich was OC for the Cards, who finished 32nd out of 32 in the league in points for.

There is also a very useful article by Thomas Bassinger on the Tampa Bay Times that looks at the DVOA overall, and separately on offense and defense, for each of Arians’s five seasons at Arizona. Arians had one good year in 2015 when his QB Carson Palmer also had one very good year … and then it was all downhill after that. The DVOA was below league average in four out of five seasons.

    • Ofcourse you’re not happy with the hiring, you think coaches have no bearing on the game. Or is it because he loves him some Jameis? As for leftwich and arians, you realize they did that with a 30 something year old Carson palmer? You can cherry pick any stats to put down any coach,or prop them up. How about we let him coach a few games first?

    • Well I’m pretty sure Mike McCoy was the OC before he was fired for having a crappy offense after 7 games and Byron was promoted. That’s like blaming Duffner for having a bad defense when we all know it was Mike Smith.

    • Good grief Naples! You must never see anything good except your own reflection in the mirror. How you profess to be a fan of this team is a mystery to me. You probably would turn down the popsicle Rich referenced because it your mind, it will get your fingers sticky when it melts or give you a brain freeze.

  3. So Bowles becoming available happened AFTER he was given the opportunity to coach the Bucs… so Bucs were talking to Arians before Dirk was fired as we all thought.

  4. Whatever, however, he’s here. We’re ahead of the other seven teams who are putting their staffs together. The plus is also these guys have worked for each other a long time, so any learning curve will be short. I’ve pointed out before, every coach either gets fired, or moves on to something else. How they improve along the way, what they learn from their past successes, and failures is what counts. It’s impossible to look at what they’ve done at one stop, Az, and translate that into what’s going to happen this time in Tampa. It’s a totally new situation, with a totally different team. B.A. won a S.B. with Pitt, but didn’t when he had Manning in Indy. Apples, and oranges. I don’t know how this is going to work out, and some of you can say you know, but you don’t. It’s a new day in T.B. with an old coach. Maybe it’s not the direction I, or you would’ve wanted the club to take, but it’s the journey we’re now on. Get on board the ship, or jump off.

  6. Love this. Nice to hear an unequivocal endorsement for Jamies from a guy that knows him, sees his ability and has confidence he can overcome his mistakes.

Finalizing Todd Bowles as DC is outstanding. Leftwich calling plays will be interesting, but with BA continuing to coach him have to fell good about this.

BA is getting the band back together, no question of whose in charge, what page their on, the culture they want to create. Let’s hope they hit the ground running!

  7. For all you Licht haters that constantly spout off about how horrible he is and we can’t win with him blah blah blah he’s the reason we landed Arians. This team isn’t lacking talent all over just a few pieces are needed and the right coaches. I firmly believe that. If not for Licht being here still Arians would be in Cleveland. Licht has made mistakes but I think GM position has sharp learning curve like coaching. I for one am glad they retained Licht and that we have Arians. Bowles will turn this defense around as well. Go Bucs!

    • I agree. Without Licht this does not happen. I think Licht continues to make more great off season moves. Go Bucs!

  8. Everybody has some doubt. We all do. I’ve been listening to a couple of AZ news feeds where they are calling Arians all kinds of..names like traitor. ect. He’s ours now. So lets get behind him. I do think our Bucs will play better. Especially on the Defensive side where the biggest problems are. I’ve said we went down hill when we lost our defensive Mojo long ago. Hopefully under Arians and Bowles, we get it back. Expect some changes along our O and D lines. Arians luvs good linemen. And don’t be surprised if we draft a LB and mostly linemen during this draft. Heyy, At least we didn’t go out and hire a coach like AZ did who could not even win in college. I think we made the right move here.
