The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were on the wrong end of a lot of stats when it came to their 2017 season. Stats both individual and team-centric showed that the Buccaneers did, in fact, have quite the down year, as their 5-11 record indicated.
But, there is a certain stat that pointed to some positives. According to Pro Football Focus, Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston was the No. 3 rated quarterback in both the third and fourth quarters throughout all of 2017.

How do you judge this stat? Is Winston a comeback kid? Or are these stats more overinflated due to the Bucs being down on the scoreboard in most of their second halves?
If you screw up the first half, you have more opportunity to rally in the second half.
How about a QB that doesn’t grab pu$$y and tank the first half? How about a QB that doesn’t bring drama to his team and embarrassment to the fans.
I’d rather have Nick Foles or Teddy Bridgewater at this point.
eagles & jets can always use a new fan…
gafikdetail – nice response. i liked it
These are grades so they aren’t going to be overinflated. So this is an independent eval of QBing on a per play basis; did he make the proper coverage read, go through progressions properly, execute the throw (or stay away from a bad play). Jameis surely graded out very well in 3rd and 4th quarters. His 1st Quarters were extremely inconsistent; some extremely good, some good, some fair, some poor. His 2nd quarters were the problem . They were nightmarish in 2017 and fed back into not answering scores, putting the defense on the field due to a TO or… Read more »
So if he’s so good in the second half of games, why is he 18-27 in his career. You can call it hating all you want but it’s the truth. If you look at OVERALL TO’s Winston is number 1 since he entered the NFL. Bottom line, his interceptions and fumbles mean we are always playing from behind and then and ONLY then does he play well. ONLY stat that mattered is wins and this guys is a loser!
If you find that you can’t help yourself from smuggling in an ideological premise in every conversation (in this case “Jameis hasn’t been an effective enough QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers”…a premise which I very much agree with), you need to step back and be more self-aware of your cognitive biases. Recognize, that the premise of “Jameis Winston graded out well in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2017 NFL games and therefore is an x quality QB” isn’t alluded to in any way by PFF releasing their 3rd and 4th quarter individual grades for QBs. Also recognize that… Read more »
Bring out the Haters!!!! “Bring out your Dead”!!!
Just as the previous years, a lot of garbage yards and stats with teams way ahead playing bend don’t break.
Man look at all those garbage time QB’s like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Desaun Watson and Marcus Mariota. Yup. Everyone knows that any yards you get in the second half of games are just meaningless garbage time stats. Right? You fools crack the F up seriously. If you hate the kid so much so that you have to warp your entire world view just to keep hating on the guy, just go find another team. Because I guarantee you Jameis Winston is going to be the starting Quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for many years… Read more »
And again, they aren’t going to be over-inflated. PFF isn’t grading these plays based on their statistical outcomes. They’re grading the process of QBing. He can have made the appropriate coverage read, gotten the ball where it should have been and on time, and executed the throw but the outcome (dropped pass) = bad statistic…but good grade. So Jameis earned those extremely good 3rd and 4th quarter grades. And finally, this isn’t 1995 where teams are dropping into Cover 2 shells when up by 8 points. He didn’t earn these grades against pathetically soft zones (I know, I observed the… Read more »
You’re preaching to the choir brother. My whole thing is that in order to be a truly objective fan of your team and it’s players/coaches, you have to be 100% willing to critique them in areas that need improvement, and also give credit where credit is due.
The Jameis haters are ready and willing to do the former, and extremely reticent to do the latter.
“… You fools crack *me* the F up…”
Agreed. Some haters will make up anything in their mind to bring him down. It’s almost comical at this point. Apparently Jameis had sex with buccanneerNW’s woman the way he is sobbing. I hope he does well and gets an extension so I can see all the little whiners on here continue to find ways to “blame jameis” he’s our quarterback and I want him to succeed. I like him as a player and what he does in his time has no effect on me or my life. I said the same thing when sapp was playing. Never heard anyone… Read more »
Write that you think Donnie Trump should resign his current office for doing the same thing buccaneerNW and I might give some credence to your request. I have asked this close to a half dozen times in numerous areas and not one of you hating yokels have ever responded. I wonder why? If any of these jack asses had watched the fourth quarter of the Saints game they wouldn’t even question this stat. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the game and behind by 2 points, Jameis hit Cameron Brate for an 11 yard gain on a 4th and… Read more »
Winston is NOT a winner so far but with all the weapons and being the 1st pick he should be. (maybe this year) He is viewed as a thug nationally and Winston being the face of the team sucks. Nothing to be proud of…
Sunshineben. I’ve seen this narrative being repeatedly recently about Jameis having a ton of weapons. Do we not remember the 2 previous seasons where the Only Elite weapon he had consistently was Mike Evans? Stop pushing this false nonsense as if it’s fact. You need a complete team to reach to post season in NFL. It’s not the sole responsibility of one man. The closest we’ve come to having a good team around Jameis is 2016 when the Defense began playing well out of no where during the 2nd half of the season. And not surprisingly that’s the year where… Read more »
Schwifty9,
This kills me every time. They act like having a dead last in defense is the QB’s fault. lol
Why are people are so hell bent on keeping Winston is mind blogging to me he hasn’t won anything with the team an embarrassment to the team an the community .On the hook for a contract extension you better cut ties with a problem before it gets outa hand you have seen 3yrs of winston with little to none progress pitiful for a 1 pick over all he is an always will be a mediocre player at best
You find it mind blogging do you? Well I find it mind boggling that anyone who’s been a fan of the Bucs for literally any stretch of time before Jameis got here can’t remember just how truly awful the QB play generally has been for this franchise. Because I remember. I remember those dark days. The Days of Mike Glennon, of Josh McCown. The days of Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson, the days of Byron Leftwich, Bruce Gradkowski and Brian Griese alike. And in the Face of all that, I can say without hesitation that Jameis Winston is without a… Read more »
Embarrassment to the community? Where did you get that information from? He’s does charities and gives back to the community a lot. If you were actually a Bucs fan you would know Jameis has progress each year he’s been in Tampa. This team he has been with has been dead last in defense and hasn’t had a kicker. We’ve lost at least 10-13 games due to kicking issues. You know who was a crappy QB and we cut ties with? Steve Young, so yeah you have no clue what you are talking about to be honest.
Sometimes I feel sad for some of you “fans”. When they post something bad about Jameis you get “see I told you he was a bad guy”. When they post something good you get “well he’s a loser anyways”. I’m wondering if this has anything to do about football anymore.
I just wish the season would start soon.
It seams like the die hard Winston fans are going to hang in there till the very end, even after this disaster year coming up, and the FSU/BUCS diehards will still be in here claiming it was the coaches fault , it was the GM fault it was the owners fault and even the fans fault that the FSU clown QB busted in the
NFL.
Well Bob the end will probably be 10 years or so from now, so hang on for the ride. lol
If you’re including me under that umbrella I’ll have you know that I’m not an FSU, nor am I a fan of any college team. The only college football I watch is on youtube and draftbreakdown.com when i’m researching players at positions of need for the Bucs during the off-season.
So I have zero bias towards any player based on what college they attended. Try again.
I went to USF so yeah I’m not a FSU fan either. I just love the Bucs.
it’s called being a fan…you might wanna try it sometime
He did pretty good second half’s, but he starts not great IMHO. Too hyped up it seems and balls sail a lot. Not a Winston hater at all I actually hope he improves that this year though. Keeping it real.
Fred I feel the same way, really most of us do. That’s not hate to be honest it’s the truth He’s a hot and cold starter, If he needs to string along some good starts.
He sucks.
Congratulations Jameis, now stop losing games for us in the first half, idiot.
So Winston loses the games in the first half? Just him. Their embarrassing dead last ranked defense had no part? Or their bottom 5 defense had no part? Or their god awful FG kicking had no part? No, it was just JW that lost the game in the 1st half. Right. Did you watch a single Bucs game last year? Or just check the boxscore after the game? Because if you did, you would have seen opposing offenses scoring at will every time they touched the ball. The amount of morons masquerading as Bucs fans is absoltely mind numbing
Absolutely*
Or their bottom 5 running game*
Winstons int’s hurt and that needs to improve, but the guys that say we are always playing from behind because of him are idiots. They ignore we had worst defense last year and no run game at all. Be careful what you wish for when you want him gone. We haven’t had decent QB with real potential since Brad Johnson! If we are even middle of pack in teams for rushing and defense overall and he doesn’t improve his int. Ratio, then and only then should anyone be taking about Winston as being the teams biggest problem. Until that happens… Read more »
Jameis is a winner! Its just too bad he isnt the entire defense , the kicker, the play caller etc… He put us in position to win many times… Last year the Bucs were in 8 games lost by one score. Also no matter who is behind center, with ZERO run game, a suspect O-line and about the Worst Bucs Defense ever… NO TEAM IS GOING TO WIN! Most games we were in were because of Jameis! To all the ones complaining about mistakes on the field… Why don’t you check out what other HoF QB’s did in the early… Read more »
So 50% of the game Winston is good… yea ,that is just great!
Too bad we didn’t have any defense in 2017; this was our biggest problem and I hope we have resolved it!
Give Winston a decent D and better than avg running game and the bucs win – like they did in 2016. 2017 was a horrible FA/Draft and this is Licht/Koetter last hurrah if they screw up. If the D fails early Smith will be gone by week 8.
Jameis is infamous for his rah-rah pre-game speeches and coming out overhyped. Once he settles in though, he plays well.
