maybe one interesting discussion for all the draft-oriented folks is what do you do in this scenario:

1) Trotter is the LB you want

2) you agree with the consensus BB he is 61

3) you have 46 and 77 picks

4) no takers on trades?

i think every draft nick says Trotter is a reach but the alternative is you don't get who you evaluate as the fit.

I will take a stab at this one.

First, I am not buying the narrative that there were no willing trade partners. There were trades all up and down the draft board. They could have made a trade if they really wanted one.

Now that being said, if Trotter absolutely is the LB I want, then I am probably drafting him regardless of where he is rated.......but I also am going to try like hell to unload that 46 pick for something in the 50s and see if I can get another pick coupled with it so that its not such a rated-risk reach. Ideally I would be looking heavily at 55 and maybe a 120-something for close value to the 46 pick. I refuse to believe that deal could not be made.

But if all else fails and there truly are no takers, and he is the guy I have my heart set on (even though he is poor value at that pick number), then I follow Licht and Bowles philosophy and take him but I cuss under my breath because I have to make that pick.

Just has to let the colts trade up for Allen. It isn't a magic wand but it's reasonable to assume they could have made a deal and traded back and still got Trotter

and if they did it's an okay pick? Like EMD says, at 55 for example no cussing?

Nothing is good or bad except by comparison.

It depends what was there at 55.

My thing is, the 2nd best and 3rd best LB were there with our pick. If they were both picked and we took Trotter it would be easier to swallow.

But to answer your question directly, I'd grade the pick better based on that yes.

Also there were other good special teams LBs available that could have added depth in the 5-7 range. We instead took a DT that barely played and traded up for a UDFA TE

That DT is going to show you something, Fire. I am, however, in complete agreement about the TE that will end up cut at the end of training camp.

I'd still cuss but it's the pick I make if he's the guy that I want.

Happy to see that but even with our 6th and 7th (or trade those to move back into the 5th) we could have landed quality LB depth.

I swear to God Licht was just done with the draft and did that trade to be done 😂

I love this draft.  We filled every need minus maybe an outside CB. Are the players right?  It'll be fun to find out.

Take Bain out and insert a reach at edge there... Then what do you think of the draft?

I'm not as good as analyzing college players as some of y'all.  If bain (and my fav Vega) were gone and we took mesidor id still be pretty happy with the draft.  We appear to have filled needs.  Every fan has favorites.  But drafting ain't easy.  You have a different LB you like better than trotter.  Cool.  No sense getting worked up about it.  I'm sure you posted what the team should have done and we can all have a good laugh in a few years.  Everyone misses.

True. And licht misses a lot.  He's also hit enough to win a SB and a bunch of NFCS.  the day after the draft I second guessed the LB pick.  Why didn't we just take the consensus highest LB?  I saw the draft party Allen threw.  I read about the dawg mentality of trotter.  If they made the decision on LB because of what drives the player I'm good with that.

If everyone is being consistent in their expressed opinions then Licht has to be one of the top GMs in the NFC since at least 2019?

The Bucs have been very competitive in that time frame, much of that time with an "incompetent" head coach.   Again, if we are trying to stay consistent in the analysis.

The key performers during that window have included numerous Licht draft choices. Wirfs, Evans, Godwin, Goedeke, Vea, White, Davis, Dean, Marpet, Cappa, SMB . . more recently Egbuka, Irving. McMillan, Barton, Mauch, Tykee Smith, Diaby.

He also directly brought a SB to Tampa with free agents and a HC who still impacts the Bucs to this day as a VP.

Far from perfect, but hardly "bad" by any stretch.

Licht has never been the issue in Tampa.
