This year's lightning rod. Josh Q has an article out that leads with this:

"Arif Hasan compiles a consensus big board every year, had Trotter No. 60 overall. The chances he would have been available in the third round when the Bucs were on the clock were slim-to-none."

And this:

"Pewter Report has reported that the team had him similarly graded to Rodriguez despite the two having very different skillsets and filling different roles within the overall linebacker umbrella."

And the direct comparison to the Devin White role in the Super Boel defense

"In 2020, when White earned a second-team All Pro honors during the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl run, the Bucs led the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (80.6) and yards allowed per rush (3.6). They finished tied for second in tackles for loss (91), tied for fourth in sacks (48), and tied for fifth in takeaways (25). White personally put up 140 tackles, nine sacks and 15 tackles for loss. He was far from a good, or even consistent coverage player. It was a known limitation throughout his Tampa Bay tenure. But that type of linebacker play unlocked the rest of the front."

Yeah, Trotter is White without the douchebaggery and willingness to be coached.  Seems like a kid who recognizes he is at his floor and will get coached up.  No need to throw dirt on the pick.  We are much better today than we were 7 days ago.

Comparing Trotter to White is dumb and lazy.  Trotter has better tackling technique and makes pre snap reads which is why he is here along with Rozeboom and Anzalone. Licht and Bowles said enough with the hyper athletic traits and lets get some LBs that can make tackles.

Would have preferred Rodriguez but that would have cost them a 3rd so i'm not terribly upset. Hopefully he can be coached to be serviceable in coverage. Still need to address the position within the next 2 years.

No.

We will need to address it in the next draft/offseason.

Not opposed to that, expect Anzalone to be serviceable for the next two years though.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Regardless, the position will be one of the biggest needs next offseason.

It's still a position of need and was not addressed with the signing of Anzalone or the drafting of Trotter. They had 3 guys with the potential to fill that gap right there waiting to be drafted and they took the opposite of a need. And I really don't care how many articles are written from people who don't actually watch football games. Trotter is great at defending the run and tackling....both great qualities.....but that is not what this team needed at the LB position.

Trotter will have much expected of him, perhaps unfairly, because of the dire need the Bucs have at that position.  What kind of team expects rookies to bail them out?  Well, whatever the answer to that is here we are.  That's us.  Hopefully they can ease him into a starting role over time and not need him to be the savior from Day 1.

The fact that Trotter is the son of a great player who has connections to Bowles could go either way.  As with Winfield, the bloodlines could help Trotter to transition to the NFL with professionalism and not be overwhelmed.  If he doesn't live up to the high expectations then the criticism will become that he was picked over better options because of the family ties.  And if Bowles loses his job and Trotter underperforms he could be headed for a quick exit under a new coach.

OF course I hope he becomes the next Winfield for this team and becomes a team leader.  That's what you expect of a 2nd round pick.

Trotter is competing with Dennis and Rozeboom so at this point Anzalone is the one that will handle most of the coverage responsibilities.

haha.

I think the comparison is downhill.  It was tough to run wide on the Bucs when White was early in his career. The Bucs describe Trotter the same way.  You seem to be saying he's better (technique and tackling and reading plays).  Even better.

haha DH is expressing his Bowles anger.  The entire team will be revamped when Bowles is fired at the end of the season
