Yeah, sacrifice the QB because he won games on his own, then saddle him with the results…somehow doesn’t quite look logical…but you guys do you.

We’ll see how it plays out.

Yeah.

But, what about the last 660 minutes of football he played?

Remember…

“hE wAs tHe mAiN rEaSoN fOr tHe cOlLaPsE”!!!!

Yes, then let’s cover our desire for “The Last Manning”, by saying we were actually for Baker, before we decided to blame him for those last 660 minutes of last season.

Its goofy. We’re going to pay him, we’re just deciding how long and how much he gets paid, and trying to do it in a way that preserves some cap room for necessary players. Baker’s going to be our QB beyond 2027.

I get it, folks are struggling to keep conversations going through quiet time.

yeah 3-8 is great.  Sign me up for more of that!

Yeah, he was kinda ugly in that 3rd & 28 that ran M1K3 out of town.

Doesn’t Baker’s worst season passing yardage in 2025 still qualify as 5th or 6th best in franchise history?

Something Like that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or those that haven’t been watching as long as we have.

fan since 2000 here

jameis winston is record holder for most quarterback records in Tampa. Surprised they jettisoned him (kidding but hopefully you see the point)

and comparing mayfield to say Brad Johnson even is apples and bowling balls as league is different now. Rule changes promoting the passing game, etc

Disclaimer: I agree that baker gives us best chance to win in 2026 and 2027, but luckily we don’t have to sign him until offseason

Been watching a bit longer, but it is why I said “we” - you want to stretch it out, for whatever logic that reasoning has in it, I prefer to strike while a bargain can be had now, so we can keep one or more set pieces in the future… but folks will be leaving, either on their own, or through cap limitations. There will be more options if you sign Baker now. Let it get outside of this year, he then gets added to the mix. He’s the one those who want to squeeze out every last “win” - don’t think is expendable. Keep doing it until there’s a better option. Been through one too many lost decades, no thanks.

Somewhere between 3-5 years is likely the hang up.

We disagree on how we attack the problem. It’s not a small issue.

It could go either way, it shouldn’t, but it could.

but you have yet to answer my question on Bargain for Baker

what in your eyes is a deal in both per year and number of years, Baker would accept now prior to the season?

I am thinking he wants 5 years, $275M.  is this the bargain you speak of?

just want to understand what you are thinking in terms of contract to offer Baker now

I’d say it would settle out at 4 years $212m - $220m

I think the Buc’s initial offer was likely 2 to 3 years, Baker will come back at 5, they’ll settle at 4.

For me, last year's record shows Baker can't carry the team. He needs a good supporting cast. If he wants to break the bank with this contract, it won't go well for the Bucs if they can't afford talent around him.

this is sort of how I see Mayfield

i think the market for that kind of QB is low 50s? Not sure but that's my guess

I’d agree with this assessment.

With the exception, that Baker did carry this team through 5 games last season.

Altgough almost every QB needs pieces around him that can leverage his strengths, having a defense that can get off the field quickly - and stop the opposing offense on 3rd & 28 to help protect leads - is key.

4 years, $220M seems about right….in February 2027

baker said no progress made so far in negotiations. Maybe the reporters should get a clue and let it die.

Buccaneer Mayfield than the larger sample of 2023, 2024 and 2025 (inclusive of the first 6 games)

During his ENTIRE tenure with the Bucs, and not the cherry picked bullshit, he's ranked:

  • 3rd in passing yards
  • 2nd in passing TD's
  • 6th in TD percentage
  • 8th in YPG
  • 4th in Total TD's

And, I'm willing to bet, this is where his agent is coming from (and has been doing since last offseason).

All of that is true, I assume - I didn’t confirm. But it is worth noting that there has been a lot of QB injuries to major players, including Mahomes, Burrow, Jackson, Dak, etc., that have missed time. Baker, Allen, & Goff are the only QB’s that have played every game in that time period. Kinda crazy with how much the QB is protected these days.

Now, that’s also a credit to Baker. He’s a tough SOB. But those nagging injuries he gets from his style of play are going to catch up with him sooner or later, especially with his age. He needs to play a little smarter so he can continue to stay on the field.

True.

There was missed time by a number of QB's during this period.

But, as you said, it's a credit to Baker.

And, I think the only real hangup on a new deal is the length/terms. He's looking for something in the 4-5 year range. And, the Bucs should justifiably be a bit hesitant with his age and style of play.

Definitely don't think it's money (guaranteed).

Even Rick Stroud has said it is not about money it is about contract length.  Scott Reynolds has said as much and we know Licht wants to sign Baker whether it is this year or the next.

Regardless of extension or new contract, that’s how it will work.

I agree, but it’s the quiet season, what else do they have to cause emotional reactions to keep selling clicks when guys are playing underwear football?

Cmon now

not so much about what we want but what baker may want

This is likely his last big contract opportunity

5 year extension brings him to age 36 I believe

with the rules protecting qb and passing game, QBs playing later and later

It’s why they better be confident he’s the guy. Everyone knows im hesitant after last years finish but he has shown flashes that he indeed is. Consistency will be key and 2026 will be huge for bakers future

he plays great and like we expect, he’s probably getting that 5 years

he plays mid, Bucs may try to finagle a 2 year Daniel jones type deal maybe settle on 3.

he plays like last half of last year and I think Bucs move in different direction

The length is the issue that concerns me...I love Baker' gritty play and his willingness to put his body on the line the way he does, but he's been fortunate not to have any major injuries over the past few years that have forced him to come off the field....Point being players that play that style wont hold up into their late 30's, once they get get to that 35-36 range the body naturally breaks down and those minor injuries become more frequent(especially as the elusiveness starts to fade).  I'm not saying Baker can't do it, just that I'm not sure once he gets to that point that he'll be playing at the level he is now.  Maybe the way to counter that is to front load the deal so that the older he gets the less his salary becomes ? but by doing that is gives less cap room to surround him while he's still in his prime...It's a delicate balance and I'm glad I'm not the one negotiating the deal....Also on the Evans question, I'm not sure that Evans stays even with Brady as QB given Brady couldn't even overcome the Bowles effect.

Evans isn’t staying with any QB in Tampa.  No one will say the quiet part out loud.  There’s too many mouths to feed in Tampa who aren’t aging HOFers.  Mike wants to get his #s and that wasn’t going to happen in Tampa with everyone back at full health.  In San Fran he gets to eat and compete and Tampa makes it look like they wanted him to stick around. It’s a win/win.  Full stop.

The biggest lies are the ones we tell ourselves.  He didn’t leave because of Bowles.

https://www.49ers.com/news/5-takeaways-from-mike-evans-following-49ers-otas

After winning Super Bowl LV with Tampa Bay, Evans knows what a championship-caliber roster looks like. Based on what he's seen during his first few months here, he believes the 49ers have the pieces to compete with anyone.

"Our roster is a great roster," Evans said. "We stack up with the best of the best in the league."

Evans later added that his belief in this roster is paired with an appreciation for how quickly opportunities can come and go in the NFL.

"I'm extremely competitive… so not taking these opportunities for granted."

I hope Mayfield's competitive spirit can prove doubters wrong because Evans is a competitor too and he sees the grass is greener on the other side now.

Maybe this motivate Mayfield's competitive spirit to push him to the longer contract he wants based on how this off season has progressed for the Bucs.
