The signing of Vea to an additional 6 million this season and an additional 22 million in 2027 makes it difficult for the Bucs to sign Baker without some creative renegotiations with other players contracts.

Bucs can sign Baker still if they want him.  They just have to let go of some of the players they think too highly of IMVHO.  Diaby isn't a guaranteed to receive an extension for example and we have to see what Bain and Walker can do.

I would prefer to see Diaby extended over Kancey but at this point I would not be surprised if Diaby and Kancey do not receive extensions.  Remember the Bucs are looking to go bigger on defense and Diaby is a powerful for his size.  One would think he fits the profile of what Bowles wants with a bigger front.  But you never know what the Bucs are thinking because they could want an elephant rusher manning that position who is larger than even Diaby to play opposite of Bain long term.  Kancey is athletic enough to play elephant position in spurts but he is really undersized as three tech if the Bucs want to be bigger upfront for the future.

of course they can, he aint going anywhere if they want him here...despite with the panties in a bunch group has to say here

he wants a 4, 5 year deal and he earned that as of the end of the 2024 season.  the 2025 season made him closer to Daniel Jones in their eyes, hence the 2 year contract offer but he has this year to break the tie

we are in a good spot and Baker despite 1 poor press conference, is handling it well. Prove the naysayers wrong....

and the main point, our QB was upset at the so called "great offer"

Oh, you must be referring to that offer you said he wouldn’t get this off-season, because the Glazers thought like you.

Derp, derp…

per Adam Scheft....Baker was upset with the length of contract...

poor guy, should just have listened to you on this board about how length and value doesnt matter! Derp, derp

Coming from the guy who thinks that a player who signs a 5-year, $250M contract actually gets $250M. 🤡

But, let’s run an exercise.

Since you’re incapable of any original thought and rely on Chat GPT for everything; why don’t you ask it what’s more important…

You say it’s:

1. Contract Length

2. AAV

I say it’s:

3. Fully guaranteed money

Let us know the results!

@badabing

What did you find out?

i posted it somewhere else but even Mayfield refers to offers (plural) so unless you think the Bucs are negotiating against themselves they did counter, talk etc. The comment you're referring to was in June

and just like that . . .

"“They did go back and forth. Like Baker Mayfield and his camp did respond to the Buccaneers’ two-year offer with their own two-year proposal as well,” Garafolo told The Rich Eisen Show yesterday.

“So it’s not like they said, ‘We are adamantly opposed to a two-year extension.’ It’s just once those numbers started to go back and forth, they couldn’t get to an agreement on total money and guarantees.”

@badabing

What did you find out?

i asked as a 31 year old QB, would you rather have 5 years, $275M with $150M guaranteed or a 2 year, $100M deal with $100M guaranteed (waiting on that link by the way)

Between the two offers, I would now take:

5 years, $275M, $150M guaranteed

Here's why.

1. The guaranteed money is $50M higher

The 2-year deal gives him $100M guaranteed.

The 5-year deal gives him $150M guaranteed.

That extra $50M is enormous because it is money he doesn't have to earn again.

And the QB is already 31. The biggest financial risk isn't necessarily that he'll be bad at 33 — it's that something happens before he gets another contract.

The 5-year deal removes much of that risk.

2. He's getting $55M/year for his prime years

The five-year deal pays:

31 → 36 years old: $275M

That's $55M per year for essentially his entire remaining prime/near-prime window.

The two-year deal gives him:

31 → 33: $100M

Then he has to negotiate again.

If he's still elite at 33, great.

But you're essentially betting $150M of guaranteed future compensation on his ability to remain healthy and elite.

3. The 2-year deal needs a very good second contract to win

This is the critical comparison.

The 5-year deal gives him $275M total.

The 2-year deal gives him $100M, meaning he needs another $175M after age 33 to equal the 5-year contract's nominal earnings.

If he gets:

3 years × $60M = $180M

then:

$100M + $180M = $280M

So yes, he could beat the five-year deal.

But he's taking substantially more risk to do it.

And remember: $180M at age 33 isn't guaranteed today.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

i then asked what if both contracts were just at $100M.

So you're essentially choosing between:

  • $100M guaranteed + $175M additional contractual compensation
  • $100M guaranteed

The five-year contract is overwhelmingly better if the player actually expects to remain healthy/productive enough to earn most of the non-guaranteed money.

The real question

The 2-year deal only becomes attractive because it gives the QB another opportunity to hit free agency at 33.

But what does he need to get in that second contract to make the 2-year deal better?

The five-year deal pays $275M.

The two-year deal pays $100M.

So the QB needs more than $175M in his second contract to beat the five-year deal on nominal dollars.

so Baker mentioned the 2 year deal, $100M right?

they countered and what did Bucs do?

we dont know the whole story, but 2 years $100M was a slap in the face if that was best and final

i have to think it was just a starting point for the Bucs and maybe Baker didnt lead to light what the other offers may have been...but again he wants 4 or 5 years.....do you agree?

so DH has been saying $100M guaranteed...how much more could he want on a 2 year deal!
