Both Greg Auman and Josh Q pointed out today that even though the Bucs routinely reworked deals with veterans over the last few seasons to clear up cap space they did not do so with Vea, the point being two-fold:
1) Vea has known for quite some time that this day was coming because he was seeing deals reworked with his teammates but not his
2) Licht and the contract guy, Greenberg, are really forward thinking (I think lol)
On number 2, I dont follow contract stuff closely, but I noticed when they redid Deans deal to cut his pay in exchange for him becoming an FA more quickly Dean was incentivized to make some deal because he only had two NON-GUARANTEED years left. That is just like Vea, one non-guaranteed year left. Maybe that is commonplace and I am not really interested in looking much further (someone here probably knows) but if its not that common it sure seems like very forward thinking in the contracts. So, even though this whole episode sort of sucks for Vea (at this moment) it looks goof for Licht and Greenberg sure know what they are doing.

You don't have to trade him right away either. You can do it at the deadline if you don't get what you are looking for now. Only reason I wait is to see if the team plays well to the point you want to keep him for a playoff run. I will always value a winning culture over a rebuild so that is last resort type stuff for me. Even if I am close to calling it a season already I feel like that's too soon to waive the white flag. I know I was waiving it when we decided to bring back bowles but I do want to see what kind of fight the actual team has. However I am still somewhat convinced this team will kind of pick up where they left off last year. It could get ugly quickly.

We really don't need Vea to be doing anything in the preseason. They can take all the time they want to work things out this preseason as long as they get it done before the season IMO. Even though he's standing on the sidelines with Bowles he's still wearing his Bucs jersey. He's still wearing his Bucs jersey on social media. So hopefully they get something done.
Sometimes there is a small measure of internal stuff that leads people to say players should honor contracts when the owners do not. The Bucs used their leverage to get Dean to rework his deal one or two years early etc. Ultimately, they found a pretty reasonable middle ground, but imagine Dean saying to the Glazers "you signed the contract" lmao.
It does not seem in the Bucs FINANCIAL best interest to sign Vea to a LTD, but I do wonder if they will work something out because its not necessarily in the teams best interest to not. Always a middle ground, but as long as one side doesnt see the same spot as the other. . . .
