this is telling...like i suggested before...he is concerned with life after football and building a brand.

...and getting another ring...2x Super Champion would like pretty nice on his HOF resume'.

Evans speaks

"Playing for the 49ers “just made the most sense, man,” Evans said, adding that another reason he signed with San Francisco “is to help me get where I want to go post-career.”

Yes and so going to an historic team with a huge market and a better chance at post-season play (Super Bowl etc) and all the exposure that comes with it makes total sense.  More power to him.

He also seemed to take the marketplace feedback personally and so wants to prove people wrong. There was a report that someone in his camp floated a $20 million-ish offer that never obviously materialized so maybe he has an extra chip on his shoulder and will go out and kill it for a year or two to prove everyone wrong.  That would be great.  And really help his brand.

Biggest thing the Bucs will miss, especially in the RZ

"Brock Purdy says that he's watched tape of Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield and how they took advantage of Mike Evans' size and contested catch ability. "As a quarterback, you dream of those kinds of situations. ... With his size, it's different."

the Mike Evans impact?

For the sake of the team (injuries), Egbuka was tethered to the line of scrimmage and forced to win one-on-ones. He had 529 routes last season, but he was in motion at the snap on only 29 of them.

That will not happen again in 2026. Robinson, who coached under Sean McVay (and worked with Kupp in Los Angeles), excels at getting his receivers free releases and easy routes by snapping the ball with them in motion. Tutu Atwell holds the NFL Next Gen Stats record with the most routes in motion in a season with 120 in 2023, but 2024 Cooper Kupp is right behind him with 114, and 2024 Darnell Mooney — in Robinson’s first year as the offensive coordinator of the Falcons — had 97.

FWIW, Rick Stroud says that Evans took less $ to go to the 49ers (I think most accept that) because he took a look around the room and wondered if he'd get the catches. He says Evans "wants a 1,000 catches" and the "Bucs took Egbuka in the first round" . . .

its about the 5:00 mark

Stroud is the beat writer so

This is accurate.  He wants to pad his stats in Niner land on a team with little to no competition.  Will not be surprised at all if he has one of his best years.

the "1000 catches" part makes sense if you think of the HOF because that would be more receptions than Moss in less games and it would put him right in the receptions of guys like Terrell Owens, Chris Carter etc.

60ish receptions per seasons for two more season etc.

There are reports out of SF that Evans is already dealing with injuries. Described as "minor". We'll see.

His hamstrings are dust.

this is why contracts with the oldies are buyer beware. I hope he gets 11+ games in.

Yea tough call for the 9ers too because he is their best receiver and he deals with injury issues. They're contenders even without him but making sure they have their stud receiver for the playoffs you would think is priority 1 for them. He might not get the stats he wants for that reason alone but I get the logic. If he's dealing with stuff wouldn't be shocked to see them lighten the load with Mike to make sure they have him when it matters most.

Mike's hammies were gone two seasons ago. It just gets worse with age. And I also hear rumblings that the fanbase in SF are collectively rolling their eyes because everyone expected him to be hurt often. Hate it for a true Bucs legend and my namesake.

Great article out with Egbuka talking about what he learned from Godwin and Evans during his rookie season.

In speaking about the confidence he gained from Evans, Egbuka chose this example:

“He was able to exude that same confidence into me,” Egbuka said. “I just remember every time we step on the field, whether it was cover 1 and it was hard outside leverage and I had to win on a go ball. I’d be like, ‘Ah, maybe I can get a different route.’ He’d be like, ‘No, you’re Emeka Egbuka, first-round draft pick, you’re that boy, you’re going to get open, you’re going to catch the rock.’

Last season, Egbuka was increasingly asked to play the Evans role and that is probably to the weakest part of his game, at least so far. And his drop off was similar to the Godwin drop off when Canales put him outside early in the 2023 season.
