Trotter C+
Is this grade because of where they took him or the player?
Probably where they took him but they did trade down. But I do not think he was in danger of being drafted in round 2 by another team. Trever Sikemma called him Devin White 2.0 which can be seen two ways. Either he is good value for a 2nd rounder or he was over drafted. Not sure but I have to see how he plays in the Bucs defense. He is probably going to be scrutinized the most from all the Bucs picks.
Doesn't change the fact that Licht has been extremely fortunate with players falling to him...
How many GM’s were fortunate that Bain fell to them on Thursday night? Several. But only one of those guys made the pick.
He gets both credit and blame for the picks he makes. That’s how this thing works.
pure luck. My brother is a Bengal fan, was with him for the draft and he had said “if Bain falls to 10 I’m going to re-think my excitement for sexy-Dexy…” he still likes the Dex addition, but was sick that they whiffed on missing Bain.Doesn't change the fact that Licht has been extremely fortunate with players falling to him...

5 picks later I thanked he and his Bengal brain-trust for making that trade.
Regarding the Keionte Scott pick, I think Bowles saw a kid that could be the player he thought Devin White could be, and he offers even more as a ST multiplier. Hope it works out this time.
At this point, I doubt even trading down and doubling up on any of the 2nd tier Edges/ILB’s could have come close to the luck that fell to him. Bet they didn’t even plan a scenario that Bain would fall to them, maybe scrambled most of their draft plans.

I don't disagree with you but it's still very lucky that we got him at 15. If he passed on him there we would have all gone mental.
Yes, they still have to make the pick but he also has had draft fall his way...
Which is basically me saying that if not for these fortune opportunities his draft record would be pretty shitty.
Of course the Red Board is the place for the fans to express their opinions, favorable or unfavorable, but there's a point where I just have to laugh when somebody comes across like they think they know it all. You don't have to be on the Jason Licht fan bus. But come on. He's a "fool" now? You don't build credibility for your opinions like that. Try feeding your statements into Chat GPT and maybe it can help you out with the wording. It’s always why your “in his lap” argument, to denigrate making the obvious pick, has always been poor. Sure, players fall in every GM’s lap. But they get the credit when they make pick, just like they get the blame when they don’t make the obvious pick and reach for a lesser player.
It’s happened before and it will likely continue to happen.
Doesn't change the fact that Licht has been extremely fortunate with players falling to him... But yes the fool can still find ways to mess it up.
He did this day 2. These picks suck

Option 1 — Firm but diplomatic While it’s true that Licht has benefited from several talented players unexpectedly falling to him, it’s also fair to acknowledge that he has still found ways to complicate situations that should have been straightforward.
Option 2 — More neutral and measured Although Licht has certainly been fortunate with the way certain players have fallen into place, there remain instances where his decision‑making has introduced unnecessary challenges.
Option 3 — Direct but professional Licht has undeniably enjoyed some good fortune with players landing in his lap, yet he has still managed at times to create issues that could have been avoided.
teaching an ILB, who’s father & brother were NFL LB’s, to add coverage awareness to his game - and taking that project player in the 2nd round - smells like reach.
i get that he adds a killer run-defender while he’s learning, i just haven’t seen this staff do that with LB’s.
it seems like that was the same plan for Devin White and SVD… maybe I’m misremembering? However, IF we get the downhill studs while we have Anzalone, and IF they can teach Trotter some coverage awareness - it could be a steal. If any kid can learn awareness at the NFL level, it very well could be Josiah Trotter.
Coverage ILB’s that could also be downhill Mike’s were thin where we picked. You mostly could get one or the other.
Cant knock them for Hurst, Scott, or Capehart. These all look like pretty sneaky-good scheme fits.

The bloodlines are certainly a selling point to the Bucs. Morrison's father played in the NFL and was a teammate of Bowles. Of course Winfield's dad was a probowler. Trotter Sr. has known Bowles for many years and I'm sure that played a big part in the drafting of Trotter Jr..... for better or for worse. If Bowles is fired then where are we with the Trotter family?teaching an ILB, who’s father & brother were NFL LB’s, to add coverage awareness to his game - and taking that project player in the 2nd round - smells like reach.
People are funny. Flipping out for reaching for a sixth round pick. Everyone on this board and so God damn pessimistic.
Consensus around the league is the Bucs had one of the better drafts. Let's re visita on 3 years before we jump to conclusions.

How would you grade the 2023 draft?
And tell me exactly how many NFL teams have won a Lombardi from nepotism or cronyism? The bloodlines are certainly a selling point to the Bucs. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt on Josiah Trotter, hence the “if anyone can learn awareness, it very well could be this kid”.The bloodlines are certainly a selling point to the Bucs. Not sure how often that occurs at the NFL level, but some sports media talent evaluators believe Josiah Trotter has room for growth there, so maybe.
if it happens, it will take some time. Until then he does look like he could be better at the Mike position than SVD, at least in a rotational role. So Trotter has some value this season, to me that’s not 2nd round value, but perhaps he’ll also learn quickly.
All-in-all, I think this was a great draft.
