You can't really judge Licht by Vea and Mayfield because you don't know their demands. You can even see that Mayfield probably describe the state of play a little unfairly
Licht is being judged by former team captains openly pushing back for a variety of reasons. Vea cited lack of communication on any contract. Mayfield cited a low ball contract offer which makes him feel disrespected. Evans rejected a higher offer from the Bucs and wanted to play in a better situation.
If you think it is about "contract" demands you are not reading what these players are saying. Mayfield has said he is willing to listen to reasonable offers and past history shows that given he signed a reasonable 3 year deal. Evans has played on shorter deals in the past but he was not biting this time around. Vea may have still been upset about not having a contract offer but at least the Bucs would be clear with their intent with Vea.

You have to take Vea's communication comment with a HUGE grain of salt because its been a couple seasons with them extending other players for cap relief but not Vea. he and his agent absolutely saw this coming. They even had Suh chime in.
Licht is much more likely to be doing his job exactly as he should even if fans dont like it. Its absolutely true from a football perspective that its probably better for the Bucs to NOT sign vea to a longer deal. LVD (and Evans?) played under one year deals
I think we all knew the team was headed into a transition period sooner or later. I expected it to be this season.....then they held onto Bowles. I think Vea needs to move on not only for himself but also for Tampa. As dominant as he is in the middle, the trend line is at best level. No need in breaking the bank with a contract for a guy who is on the downside of his career in a very physical position. I like the team's strategy when it comes to Vea. I do not like the team's strategy when it comes to Baker the longer this plays out. Its like both sides are just jabbing at one another and now in the media.
The thing with Vea is that the Bucs want to hand Vea's money to Kancey but Kancey can't stay healthy. So if the Bucs are waiting for Kancey to have a Cinderella season they sure can do that. But if Kancey can't do that and stay healthy and an agitated Vea then declines any Bucs future offer what have the Bucs really gained here?

The Bucs want Kancey to carry the mantle for the team to move on from Vea. But Kancey can't prove to stay healthy so far.
Vea's agent knows this and that is why they are pressing hard now. If Kancey balls out and plays really well the Bucs will be more likely to hand Kancey a new contract over Vea. That is how agents play the game.

Vea’s agent recognizes his client is playing on the last year of his deal, with no guaranteed money.
He’s also aware that his client is on the wrong side of 30, and has potentially one last shot at paydirt.

I think we just need to trade em for a 2nd and 4th and maybe a LB depth piece and call it a day.
